A nipping device is provided in a transfer unit (21) having a fixed support (33) and rotating element (30,31,32,39) rotatably supported by the fixed support (33). The nipping device retains a printing sheet against the circumferential surface of the rotating element (30,31,32,39), and separates the printing sheet from the transfer unit (21). The nipping device includes a nipper (40), a pivoting lever device and a drive device (48,53). The nipper (40) is disposed pivotally on the circumferential surface of the rotating element, and retains the feed-leading edge of the printing sheet. The levers (41,42) of the pivoting lever device are disposed within the rotating element (30,31,32,39), pivotal on an axes (43) intersecting the circumferential surface of the transfer unit (21), and functions therein to open and close the nipper (40) by which the printing sheet is nipped against and separated from the transfer unit (21). The drive device (48,53) is disposed in the fixed support (33), and functions to turn the pivoting levers (41,42). Due to the structure of this device, it is possible to impel the pivoting levers (41,42) in a uniform direction by the use of tension springs (45), and furthermore the setting of the impelling force of the springs (45) to the minimum necessary, is facilitated, such that the load applied to the driving system of the transfer unit can be reduced.

A print medium sheet feeding system for an ink jet printer having a print head with a planar array of jets is provided by clamping the leading edge of a paper sheet after it is passed through a printing zone to a rotating assembly of parallel disks. The sheet is pulled through the printing zone by rotating a plurality of disks (14) with a clamp (50) being carried with the rotating drum (14c) formed by said disks (14). A platen (92) is provided which has a flat surface in the printing zone (56) forming a tangent to the outer surface of the rotating disks (14). The sheet is initially clamped against the drum (14c) by the combination of a lever arm (80) which is selectively engageable with the drum for rotation therewith and an attached actuating arm (72) having a plate (52) which secures a sheet to the drum surface. The resulting clamp (50) rotates with the drum (14c) until the sheet passes below idler rollers which are biased against the drum surface. These rollers then hold the sheet against the drum for motion of the sheet with the drum surface. The actuating arm is released from the drum after a sheer passes below the rollers, thereby allowing any sized sheet to be fed through the system.

A counterbalancing and sheet clamp retention system for high speed sheet handling drums (24) of the type in which leading and trailing edge clamping bars (46, 48) extend along the length of the drum periphery and are capable of movement between retracted and sheet clamping positions for automatic loading and unloading successive sheets to and from the drum (24). The clamping bars (46, 48), supported at opposite ends for movement between their respective retracted and clamping positions, are engaged centrally along their length by a retaining device (72) which moves to a clamping bar engaging position under centrifugal force as the rotational velocity of the drum (24) reaches a predetermined value. The retaining device (72) is a self-contained unit insertable through a radial opening in the drum (24) and contains a pair of bell crank retainers (88, 90) each having a clamping bar engaging claw (98) on one arm and a weight (100) on the other arm so that centrifugal force operates to pivot the bell crank and bring the claws (98) thereon into engagement with the closed sheet clamping bars (46, 48). The drum (24) is further counterbalanced by a fixed weight (104) opposite from the movable bell crank weights. Further, the ends of the clamping bars (46, 48) are moved against the drum periphery to their sheet clamping positions by centrifugal force acting on counterbalancing weights carried by radially movable brackets (38, 40) from which the ends of the respective clamping bars (46, 48) are supported.

Die Umfangsgeschwindigkeit des Rotationsanlegers (1) einerseits und die Geschwindigkeit des Abtransportförderers (2) anderseits sind derart aufeinander abgestimmt, dass mit jedem Satellit (37) gleichzeitig ein Greifer (35) an der Abgabestelle (28) vorbei geführt wird. An der Abgabestelle (28) sind die Greifer (27) jeweils dem abgebenden Satelliten (37) zugewandt und kämmen mit den von den Satelliten (37) ausgestossenen Papierbogen.

The clamp is composed of a plurality of radially movable displacing members spaced along the platen and a plurality of pressers joined to the displacing members for pressing the sheet down against the platen. The guide membes are disposed in circumferential registry with respective slots defined in the displacing members for passing through the slots, respectively, to engage the sheet end to remove the same from the clamp upon rotation of the platen.

The invention also relates to a method for the format adjustment of a sheet-guiding drum. The object of the invention is to further improve the sheet guiding on format-adjustable sheet-guiding drums in sheet-processing machines. According to the invention, the object of the invention is achieved in that a middle casing segment (10) in the circumferential direction has a drive.
