An industrial machine has a main unit 14, a working implement 8 installed on the main unit, and two cameras 18 and 19 each mounted at a known position with respect to a machine center of the main unit. At least three targets 21 are installed on the working implement so that the targets are within visual field of each of the two cameras. An arithmetic processing device 23 extracts the images of at least three targets in common to the images from stereo-images taken by the two cameras, for obtaining a three-dimensional position of each target image, and for calculating a position and a posture of the implement with respect to the industrial machine main unit based on the three-dimensional position obtained.

An earthmoving system (100) includes a laser transmitter (102) for transmitting a reference beam of laser light, and a bulldozer (106) having a laser receiver (126) mounted on the bulldozer for sensing the laser light. The earthmoving system further includes a frame (108) and a cutting blade (110) supported by a blade support (112) extending from the frame. The blade support has a pair of hydraulic cylinders (114.114) for raising and lowering the blade in relation to the frame. A gyroscopic position sensor (136) senses rotation of the frame about an axis generally transverse to the bulldozer and passing through the center of gravity (134) of the bulldozer. The control (140) is responsive to the laser receiver and to the gyroscopic orientation sensor, and controls the operation of the cylinders and the position of the cutting blade.

An earthmoving system, includes in one embodiment a laser transmitter for transmitting a reference beam of laser light, and a laser receiver mounted on a mast on the bulldozer blade. The bulldozer has a frame and a cutting blade supported by a blade support extending from said frame. The blade support includes hydraulic cylinders for raising and lowering the blade in relation to said frame, and for tilting the blade along its length. The mast extends upward from, and is movable with, the blade. An inclinometer is mounted for movement with the blade to provide an indication of the inclination of the blade. A sensor detects turning of the bulldozer. A control is responsive to the laser receiver, to the inclinometer, and to the sensor, for controlling the operation of said cylinders and adjusting the position of said blade. When rapid turning of said bulldozer is detected the control operates to reduce the errors that would otherwise result from an erroneous inclinometer output.
