A magnetic brush developer apparatus comprises a plurality of developer housings (32, 34) each including a plurality of magnetic brush rolls (35 - 38) associated therewith. Conductive magnetic brush (CMB) developer is provided in each of the developer housings. The CMB developer is used to develop electronically-formed images. The developer conductivity is in the range of 10- 9 to 10- 13 (ohm-cm)- 1 . The toner concentration of the developer is in the order of 2.0 to 3.0% by weight; the charge level is less than 20 microcoulombs/gram, and the developer rolls are spaced from the charge-retentive surface a distance in the range of 1.0 to 3.0 mm.

La réalisation d'une reproduction multicolore consiste à charger uniformément un élément photoconducteur (2), exposer cet élément pour créer une première image électrostatique, développer la première image électrostatique à l'aide d'un toner d'une première couleur pour créer une première image de toner, recharger de préférence uniformément ledit élément photoconducteur, exposer l'élément chargé créant une seconde image électrostatique, développer la seconde image électrostatique par l'application de toner d'une seconde couleur aux zones exposées. On peut répéter le procédé pour n'importe quel nombre de couleurs. L'image multicolore est ensuite transférée en une seule étape sur une feuille de réception. La seconde étape et les étapes suivantes de développement sont exécutées par un dispositif de développement (42, 44) à brosses magnétiques employant des particules porteuses magnétiques dures roulées au tambour dans une zone de développement, ledit roulage n'affectant pas les images de toner précédentes. Les particules porteuses magnétiques dures ont de préférence une coercivité d'au moins 100 gauss lorsqu'elles sont magnétiquement saturées, mais idéalement une coercivité d'au moins 1000 gauss lorsqu'elles sont magnétiquement saturées. Deux images multicolores ainsi formées sont transférées sur les côtés opposés d'une feuille de copie et, les images sont fusionnées simultanément afin de produire des images multicolores duplex.

Four color toners of yellow, magenta, cyan and black, and four two-component developers containing the four color toners respectively in combination with a resin-coated ferrite carrier suitable for multi-color electrophotographic copying are provided. Each of the four-color toners is strictly regulated in relation not only to the carrier but also to the other color toners. More specifically, each color toner is strictly controlled with respect to a particle size distribution, freeness from agglomeration, melting characteristics including heat-absorption peaks and apparent viscosity on melting, chromaticity, triboelectric chargeability and optical toner concentration detection characteristic. Because of the strict regulation of these various parameters, the resultant multi-color toner or developer system shows excellent performances at every stage of multi-color electrophotography including development, transfer and fixing (color-mixing) for a long period of successive copying.

Dispersed within this solid non-elastomeric continuous phase are many multi-compartment porous chemically crosslinked elastomeric particles that have a mode particle size of at least 1 μm and up to and including 10 μm. The composite particles can be used as toner particles in electrophotographic imaging methods to provide fused toner images and especially stacked fused toner images.
