A flextensional tranducer driven by magnetically biased rare earth rods (31). The rods (31) are arranged in stacks with rare earth magnets (34) mounted on each end of each stack for providing the bias field. The rods (31) are slotted to reduce eddy currents and surrounded by a slotted drive coil (32) with a slot (32a) in the coil bobbin. The ends of the flextensional shell associated with the shell major axis have a full radius curvature which stiffens the shell ends so that the axial bias and drive forces will not break the rare earth magnets (34) in flexure.

The portable terminal includes at least a vibration member (12) having a first surface (12a) exposed to an exterior, a vibration element (14) operative to vibrate the vibration member (12) in response to an electric signal corresponding to sound information, and electronic circuitry (17) that outputs the electric signal, a difference in amplitude between individual places within the first surface (12a) of the vibration member (12) in a vibrating state being less than or equal to 60 dB in terms of a ratio of maximum value to minimum value of amplitude. A portable terminal can be obtained that is capable of acquiring sound information successfully simply by being brought near to or into contact with the ear without the necessity of careful handling.

The control unit is configured to transmit a multi-frequency drive signal (56) to the actuator element, the multi-frequency drive signal comprising a cooling frequency component (58) and an acoustic frequency component (60) superimposed on the cooling frequency component. The cooling frequency component causes a cooling jet to eject from the opening of the body. The acoustic frequency component produces a desired audible output.
