A method of manufacturing three-dimensional parts using sheets of a thermoplastic resin high-performance fiber-reinforced composite material includes the steps of supplying the sheet (11) of the high-performance resin-reinforced composite material which uses as a matrix a thermoplastic resin and in which reinforcing fiber is oriented, clamping an end portion of the sheet (11) by a sheet clamping device (10), conveying the sheet (11) to a heating/forming zone, heating the sheet (11) to a predetermined temperature, clamping the sheet(11) by upper and lower frames (1, 4) by driving cylinders (3, 8), forming the three-dimensional part (13) by operating a mold (6) and thereby deep drawing the clamped sheet (11) inwardly according to a stroke of the mold (6), and repeating the above-described series of steps continuously.

Disclosed is a process for the preparation of a thickness-reduced deep-draw-formed can, which comprises the steps of (i) coating a crystalline thermoplastic resin on a metal plate, (ii) heating the coated metal plate at a temperature higher than the glass transition point (Tg) of the thermoplastic resin and draw-forming the coated metal plated, and (iii) heating the obtained preliminarily drawn cup at a temperature higher than the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the thermoplastic resin and redrawing the cup at a bend-pulling speed of at least 1 m/min. According to this process, damage of the coating layer can be drastically moderated, and a deep-draw-formed can having prominently improved corrosion resistance and heat resistance can be obtained.

This process of molding a thermoplastic sheet can be used for blister packaging. The process particularly includes the premolding step of bringing the sheet into close contact with the outer cylindrical surface of a molding drum, preheating the sheet and concurrently vacuum sucking the sheet into a cavity defined on the outer cylindrical surface of the drum; and the full-molding step of vacuum sucking the sheet and concurrently inserting the sheet into the cavity by means of a plug. The process can well mold a thermoplastic sheet including a layer of polypropylene.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for the shaping of a sheet of preform material. A flat planar (heated) sheet of preform material is held tightly between two elastomeric sheets, the sheets and preform material forming a laminate assembly. The laminate assembly is then formed about a mold having the desired contours. The elastomeric sheets maintain the preform material parallel to the surface contours of the mold as the molding process proceeds. A fluid such as air is flowed between the mold surface and the laminate assembly during the forming process to prevent the elastomeric sheets from binding on the mold surface. Wrinkles are eliminated in the final shape of the preform material, and fiber distortion or tears or rips in the material are minimized due to the fluid lubrication between the mold surface and the laminate assembly.

Apparatus for forming components from thermoplastics materials, e.g. watch glasses, comprises a tool (12) having a template (12A) and a support plug (12C). Pressure can be applied to the template by means of a heat conducting rod (20) and a heat conducting plate (12B), whilst the plug (12C) is supported upon a conducted and cooling plate (16). Heat is applied from a hot air gun (24) or by means of an electrically heated plate (12D) to a sheet of thermoplastics material (14) through the plate (12B) and template (12A). The method and apparatus ensure that the formed component retains a degree of optical flatness.

Cuvette belts (22) are made from strip plastic material (20) which is advanced in turn through a series of in-line processing stations. The strip material is indexed stepwise through one or more of the stations (122, 124, 154, 110) and advanced in continuous motion through the remaining station or stations (174). A novel method of forming two cuvette belts simultaneously from two strips of plastic material is also described in which the strips are formed with regularly spaced transverse pockets (12) brought into register and sealed together to form a composite strip consisting of two integral mirror image cuvette belts which is then divided longitudinally to separate the belts.
