To that end, the motor includes a rotor that rotates through a plurality of rotational positions, the first stator having the first stator circuitry and a first winding, and the second stator having the second stator circuitry and a second winding. The first stator circuitry energizes the first winding in response to the rotational position of the rotor. In a similar manner, the second stator circuitry energizes the second winding in response to the rotational position of the rotor.

This PMDC machine concept operates from a constant dc voltage source (30) with maximum torque capacity throughout its rotational speed range. The back electromotive force (back-emf) produced by the machine windings (21) under the constant amplitude air gap (12) field produced by the magnets (15) is controlled by changing the winding configurations in series-parallel combinations (Figs. 3A and 3B). Torque is, thus, controlled from minimum to maximum speed without exceeding winding current capacities and without need to increase driving voltage with speed. A startup and low speed the combined back-emf of series connected windings (21) limit current while producing maximum torque. At higher speeds where back-emf would severely limit torque, the windings are connected in series-parallel combinations for maximum achievable torque without exceeding winding current capacities. To accomplish this, windings (21) concentrated in slots (17) are used. Result is optimum utilization of core magnetics and capability of operating at constant input voltage.

A motor having an external rotor (30), or "inside out motor" has a split C arrangement of ferromagnetic members (44,46) which function as the poles of the electromagnet in the motor. The ferromagnetic members are generally C-shaped and mounted on opposite end caps (40,42) of the rotor. The ferromagnetic members on the opposing end caps are angularly offset from each other. The ferromagnetic members on each end cap are also spaced apart from each other, and receive a portion of the motor windings within them. The motor is constructed for assembly using few or no separate fastening devices to secure the components together. In one embodiment, a bearing core serves as the base on which all parts are assembled.

A brushless DC motor with an adjustable timing feature is provided. The timing adjustment allows a specific motor's performance to be optimized by compensating for individual variations both in the characteristics of the rotor position sensors as well as in their locations. The rotor position sensors may be affixed to a heat sink within a portion of the motor housing. To improve the cooling efficiency of the heat sink at least a portion of the motor housing to which the heat sink is thermally coupled is cooled through either active or passive cooling. The rotor position sensors may be enclosed by a structure which improves their thermal and electrical isolation. A means of monitoring and controlling the speed of the motor is also provided.

Hydrostatic fluid film bearings (41, 42) are provided between the ends of the spindle (5) and a bronze bearing (64, 65) to support spindle (5) in such a manner so as to eliminate wear. A single oil reservoir (20) is used to supply oil to the hydrostatic bearings (41, 42), as well as to the cooling jacket labyrinth (17) of the motor (40).

This invention is to provide a motor structure in a salient pole type DC motor in which torque ripple and cogging torque are reduced without deceasing the efficiency and the torque constant, and hence the irregularity of the rotation is reduced. The magnetic flux density distribution of an air gap is more approached to a sine wave shape by forming a groove or a slit in the vicinity of the neutral part (a boundary of an N-pole and an S-pole) of a rotor magnet in the length of the air gap formed in a radial direction of the rotor magnet and a stator core of a salient pole type DC motor.
