The invention concerns a device for connecting a first tube (10) to a connection tube (14) whose end portions (22, 24) pass through an opening (12) in the first tube. In order to produce a force-locking connection between the tubes in a simple manner, a tool (34) is proposed which comprises at least two sections (36, 38) which can be displaced axially relative to each other and extend inside the connection tube (14) into or almost into the first tube (10), one of the sections (36) having a radially protruding projection (42) which, when the sections are disposed inside the tube (10), engages behind the end portions (22, 24). Externally of the protruding projection the sections have an effective overall cross-section which is adapted to the internal cross-section of the connection tube (14) in the region of the opening (12) in the first tube (10).

The object of the invention is a sealing arrangement for connecting an internal combustion engine fuel injection valve to a fuel feed line. In the present state of the art, arrangements as described in the preamble to claim 1 or 8 have an O-ring as the seal which is fitted in an outer groove of the valve housing terminating in a groove-defining flange mating with a drilling in the line, whereby the O-ring is designed to seal radially inwards (groove base) and outwards (wall of the hollow space receiving the valve) (see Fig. 8). The drawback of such arrangements is that, when used in cold, the material of the O-ring must have special properties and there is a radially outward leakage if the swelling of the material in the fuel is reduced owing to periods of non-operation. It is the aim of the invention to keep the arrangement sealed even below -40 °C and with insufficient swelling of the material. This is achieved by the arrangement as claimed in claim 1, in which the radially inner sealing surface (134) of the sealing component (132) is axially expanded and engages with an additional annular surface (128) on the line (110, 116) and bears on said surface (128) to seal it and the coefficient of heat expansion of the component (132) on the one hand and the contacting metal components on the other behave in such a way that the component shrinks radially inwards on cooling. The advantage of this system is a seal even at very low operating temperatures even when using an ordinary material for the seal without any special low-temperature properties.

A method of forming a tube joint which can be used in a desalination plant includes providing a fluted tube (1), applying a sealant (51) to the tube end (19) and inserting the tube end (19) into a tube sheet or plate (3) to form a joint therebetween. After insertion, the inner surface of the fluted tube (1) is worked to deform external ridges of the fluted tube (1) and uniformly distribute the sealant (51) throughout the joint area. The fluted tube (1) is deformed using a roll expanding method. The fluted design of the tube (1) retains sealant (51) in the joint area during tube (1) insertion and expansion and takes advantage of the heat transfer characteristic of the flutes (9) to provide an improved joint construction especially adapted for heat exchange use.
