The invention provides a method of preparing a dispersion of a fumed metal oxide in a liquid carrier comprising the following sequential steps: (a) providing a liquid carrier at a pH that effects dissolution of the metal oxide at a rate the same as or greater than the metal oxide dissolution rate in water at a pH of about 8, (b) mixing with the liquid carrier, in any order, one or more aliquots of both a fumed metal oxide and a metal ion source to form a dispersion, such that the dispertion does not coagulate, and (c) optionally adjusting the pH of the dispersion to the pH of the liquid carrier in step (a). The method allows for the preparation of the dispersion to be done with a high solids loading and at a high pH. Furthermore, the dispersion can have a shelf-life of at least about 1 hour or more at 25°C.

The method includes the steps of: providing a sputtering metal workpiece made of a valve metal; transverse cold-rolling the sputtering metal workpiece to obtain a rolled workpiece; and cold-working the rolled workpiece to obtain a shaped workpiece. The sputtering targets exhibits a substantially consistent grain structure and/or texture on at least the sidewalls.

A process to purify and classify a dispersion containing stabilized particles having counterions and ions as well as free species is disclosed. The solution may comprise an aqueous media, a solvent media, or a combination of both and can include more than one type of aqueous and/or solvent solutions. The process includes at least the steps, in any order, of substantially removing the particles having sizes above about 1 micron, preferably above 0.5 micron; substantially removing the free species; and exchanging at least a portion of the counterions that are a part of the stabilized particles. The process disclosed is especially useful in purifying dispersions where the ionic stabilized colloidal particles are carbon black having attached organic groups comprising at least one ionic group, or at least one ionizable group, or mixtures thereof.

Also described are the resulting modified particles having attached monomer or polymer groups as well as methods of preparing such modified particles. Separation devices and systems are described which have a stationary phase and a mobile phase, wherein the stationary phase contains carbon-clad zirconium dioxide particles having attached at least one organic group. The stationary phase which is used in the present invention has the ability to dial in the selectivity by attaching the proper organic groups onto the carbon-clad zirconium dioxide particles in order to achieve the desired separation. Various separation processes are described such as chromatography, electrophoresis, magnetic separations, membrane separations, and the like. The processes to accomplish these types of separations are also described.

The present invention relates to a process for preparing surface-modified colored pigments. The process includes the steps of: preparing a reaction batch comprising a treating agent and a diazotizing agent; adding a colored pigment to the batch; and mixing the colored pigment and the batch under high shear conditions to form a reaction product comprising a surface-modified colored pigment. The treating agent has an organic group which comprises at least one diazotizable group. In a prefered embodiment the diazotizable group comprises a) at least one aromatic group or at least one C1-C20 alkyl group, and b) at least one ionic group, ionizable group, nonionic group, or a mixture thereof. The surface-modified colored pigments prepared by the process of the present ivention have been found useful in aqueous or solvent based compositions and particularly in ink jet ink compositions.
