The invention permits several types of treatment on different surfaces to be carried out in series or step by step, by means of a device which can be produced in a more compact form than conventional devices.

The apparatus comprises ink jet printheads 4 for printing on a surface of the substrate, a plurality of rollers 12, 14 arranged to move the substrate 16 relative to the printhead 4, and a pressure source 22. The pressure source 22 is arranged to apply a negative gauge pressure 32 to the substrate 16. The application of the pressure can hold the substrate flat and can reduce undesired movement of the substrate relative to the rollers 12, 14. The apparatus allows for high quality full colour images to be printed onto substrates in a single pass using an ink jet printer.

For lighter colored mediums, sufficient contrast between the printed image and the medium upon which the image is printed can be maintained utilizing a lower resolution, while a higher resolution must be utilized to maintain sufficient contrast for darker colored mediums. Since it is not necessary to utilize the higher resolution for all mediums to ensure sufficient contrast is always provided, the amount of ink used by the printing system is reduced.

The printing apparatus includes a rotatably driven cylinder (12) having a smooth, high friction outer surface, and a plurality of color print stations (14a, 14b, 14c, 14d, 14e) spaced circumferentially about the cylinder. A receptor web supply roll (16) is mounted adjacent to the cylinder and supplies an uninterrupted length of a receptor web to the outer surface of the cylinder. The receptor web is frictionally engaged with the outer surface of the cylinder such that the web rotates therewith when the cylinder is rotated. A stepper motor and gearing assembly is connected to the cylinder for rotating the cylinder, and therefore the receptor web that is disposed on the outer surface thereof, to position the receptor web relative to the color print stations. The stepper motor and gearing assembly allow precise positioning of the cylinder and the receptor web relative to each print head, to ensure precise print registration.

The present invention relates to assembling identification documents in an over-the-counter issuing environment. In one implementation of the present invention, we provide an identification document capable of being printed by an ink jet printer-based system in an over-the-counter environment. The identification document comprises a core layer and a first indicium. The core layer has a first surface, and the first indicium is printed directly onto at the first surface of the core layer. The first indicium is formed by a pigmented ink jet ink. The core material can have an affinity for a particular substance (e.g., water) and the pigmented jet ink can include that substance (e.g., an aqueous-based ink jet ink). An identification document substrate can receive pigmented ink jet ink from an ink jet printer without requiring a receiver layer or receiver coating on the substrate. The absence of the receiver layer allows for direct bonding of additional layers, such as laminates, to an unprinted substrate, thereby not interfering with the bonding mechanism of the laminate to the substrate. Identification documents formed in this manner can meet or exceed all AAMVA, ANSI, and ISO requirements.
