An object is to provide a recorded article or sticker whereby counterfeited articles and genuine articles can be visually distinguished in simple fashion in the market and wherein it is not possible to identify in the market the location and type of the anti-counterfeiting measures that have been taken. Both an overt region 3 (which can be recognized visually in the market) are printing using a color-change ink or liquid-crystal ink, for example, and a covert region 5 formed by for example optical retroreflective printing (which cannot be recognized without using a special tool) are provided on the surface of the same recording medium. The overt region 3 and the covert region 4 may be arranged at different locations or may overlap, or may be positionally aligned. The overt letter/design pattern and the covert letter/design pattern may be the same or different. An overt recording that is printed using liquid-crystal ink may also function as a covert recording by employing a genuineness inspection method using a circularly polarized plate. A sticker may be provided with one or a plurality of cuts such that the sticker is broken when peeled off, so that it cannot be reused.

The invention relates to improved security documents such as banknotes, cheques and passports which are required to provide a high degree of security against imitation and a substrate for producing such security documents. The invention therefore provides a substrate for security documents comprising at least a plurality of layers of polymeric film (14, 15) laminated together with at least one metallic layer (17) therebetween, wherein at least one of the polymeric layers is biaxially oriented and at least another comprises an opaque voided film wherein the opacity of at least a portion of the voided polymeric layer is reduced.

In the process for preparing an optical data card a light reflective layer (4) is formed on one surface of a protective film (5); a photoresist layer (7) is formed on the light reflective layer; the resulting laminate is subjected to photoetching to form, in said light reflective layer, an optical information pattern (3) composed of information pits. Then the protective film having the light reflective layer having the optical information pattern thus formed is bonded to a card substrate (1) so that the light reflective layer and the card substrate are in face to face relationship. In an alternative embodiment, the layers (4) and (7) are applied to the card substarte (1) and processed thereon before bonding with the protective film (5).

An improved credit card having a clear, unbroken metallized surface with printed graphics thereon which is scratch resistant and a method of making the same are disclosed. The method involves heat transferring a metallized foil to a first surface of a plastic substrate, silk-screen printing over the metallized foil with ultraviolet curable ink, drying the ink with ultraviolet light and overlaminating the printed foil with a clear polyester film coated with a heat-activated adhesive or coating it with an ultraviolet curable varnish which is cured by applying ultraviolet light to the coating. The plastic substrate is in the form of a large sheet from which a plurality of cards are die cut after the printing and application of the transparent film. A magnetic tape is then applied to the back of each card.
