Foamed thin materials such as foamed film and foamed fibrillated materials produced by extruding a composition consisting of 100 parts by weight of aliphatic polyester having a melt viscosity of 1.0 × 10³ - 1.0 × 10⁵ poises at a temperature of 190°C and a shear rate of 100 sec⁻¹, and having a melting point of 70 - 200°C , and 0.2 - 5 parts by weight of foaming agent. These foamed thin materials has biodegradability, excellent mechanical, insulating, touch and aesthetic properties. They are useful materials as insulating, packaging, oil absorbing materials and filters.

Injection-molded articles consisting of an aliphatic polyester having a melt viscosity of 6 × 10²-2 × 10⁴ poises at a temperature of 190°C at a shear rate of 1000 sec⁻¹ and a melting point of 70-190°C . The present invention provides injection-molded articles excellent in heat stability and mechanical strength as well as having biodegradability which can be used for industrial parts, automotive members, food and beverage containers, gardening pots and the like.

A method for producing polyester foamed articles comprising: heating and foaming a resin composition comprising a foaming agent, and an aliphatic polyester having a melt viscosity of 1.0 × 10³ - 1.0 × 10⁶ poises at a temperature of 190°C and a shear rate of 100 sec⁻¹, and having a melting point of 70 - 190°C . Extrusion or forming in a mold using pre-expanded beads can be applied. The foamed articles such as insulating boxes and cushioning materials have biodegradability and excellent mechanical properties such as tensile strength and cushioning properties.

A sheet formed by using as a main component an aliphatic polyester having a melt viscosity of 1.0 × 10³ - 1.0 × 10⁶ poises at a temperature of 190°C and a shear rate of 100 sec⁻¹, and having a melting point of 70 - 190°C . The sheet of the present invention is biodegraded when buried in soil and is excellent in mechanical properties and transparency. The sheet is also superior in non-absorbency of aroma as well as heat-sealability and formability.

A method of obtaining polystyrene plastics consists in that an aqueous medium containing fresh-made tricalcium phosphate (0.15-1.5 % by weight) and calcium carbonate (0.07-0.35 % by weight) is heated before mixing it with a monomer (comonomer or prepolymer) for preparation of a suspension, and during the suspension-polymerization process, at a conversion of 15-47 %, secondary sodium alkyl sulphates (0.001-0.020 % by weight) are introduced. The method allows to obtain all kinds of polystyrene plastics by using the same technology, to provide for required granulometric composition of the beads with a low content of powder fractions and to increase the stability of the process.

Fire-retardant expandable vinyl aromatic polymer beads are prepared by an aqueous suspension method whereby micronized hexabromocyclododecane and a volatile aliphatic hydrocarbon foaming agent are incorporated into particles of a thermoplastic such as polystyrene. The beads are useful in the preparation of molded foam articles having excellent resistance to flame.
