    摘要： Provided is an image forming apparatus comprising first and second image forming stations (SB, SC, SM, SY), the first and second image forming stations (SB, SC, SM, SY) both including an image bearer (1Y, 1M, 1C, 1B) which carries an electrostatic image, charging means (2B, 2C, 2M, 2Y) for collecting residual toner on the image bearer (1Y, 1M, 1C, 1B) and charging the image bearer (2B, 2C, 2M, 2Y), and developing means (4B, 4C, 4M, 4Y) for developing a toner image on the image bearer (1Y, 1M, 1C, 1B) using toner, and a rotating transfer member (51) which is adapted to superpose and transfer toner images on the image bearers (1Y, 1M, 1C, 1B) of the first and second image forming stations (SB, SC, SM, SY). The image forming apparatus further comprises returning means for returning toner in the charging means (2B, 2C, 2M, 2Y) to the image bearer (1Y, 1M, 1C, 1B) by applying a return voltage to the charging means (2B, 2C, 2M, 2Y). The rotating transfer member (51) is adapted to transfer at least part of toner returned from the charging means (2B, 2C, 2M, 2Y) to the image bearers (1Y, 1M, 1C, 1B), by applying a predetermined transfer current onto the rotating transfer member (54). The image forming apparatus also comprises controlling means for controlling the timing of toner return by the returning means of the first image forming station (SB, SC, SM, SY) and that of the second image forming station (SB, SC, SM, SY) so that toner returned from the first image forming station (SB, SC, SM, SY) and toner returned from the second image forming station (SB, SC, SM, SY) differ in position on the rotating transfer member (51).
