In a distributed file system, when a user requests a computer to create a distributed file, a management computer acquires a list of computers complying with an allocation rule selected by the user from allocation rules taking the performance, security level, reliability level and utility rate into consideration. When the user requests the computer to access the distributed file, on the other hand, the partial files and the server information are collected from each computer. Each computer evaluates the allocation of the partial files based on the selected allocation rule and the server information from each computer, and if required, selects a destination computer and instructs the partial files to be moved to the destination computer.

The intelligent data storage manager functions to combine the non-homogeneous physical devices contained in a data storage subsystem to create a logical device with new and unique quality of service characteristics that satisfy the criteria for the policies appropriate for the present data object. In particular, if there is presently no logical device that is appropriate for use in storing the present data object, the intelligent data storage manager defines a new logical device using existing physical and/or logical device definitions as component building blocks to provide the appropriate characteristics to satisfy the policy requirements. The intelligent data storage manager uses weighted values that are assigned to each of the presently defined logical devices to produce a best fit solution to the requested policies in an n-dimensional best fit matching algorithm. The resulting logical device definition is then implemented by dynamically interconnecting the logical devices that were used as the components of the newly defined logical device to store the data object.

A database merger method (20) merges two or more anonymized healthcare databases (X, Y). Each anonymized healthcare database has personally identifying information anonymized including having medical care units replaced by medical care unit placeholders. In the database merger method, statistical patient feature distributions are computed for medical care unit placeholders in the anonymized healthcare databases. Medical care unit placeholders in different anonymized healthcare databases are matched by matching corresponding statistical patient feature distributions for the respective medical care unit placeholders. Patients in different anonymized healthcare databases are matched. The patient matching is performed within matched pairs of medical care unit placeholders to improve computational efficiency. A databases alignment table (16) is generated identifying the matched patients, or a merged anonymized healthcare database is generated that merges patient features in the different anonymized healthcare databases for each matched patient into a single patient entry.

A database management system (DBMS) run a host CPU and a hardware coprocessor accelerate traversal of a tree-type data structure by allocating reusable memory in cache to store portions of the tree-type data structure as the tree-type data structure is being requested by the host CPU. The hardware coprocessor manages the cached tree-type data structure in a manner that is transparent to the host CPU. A driver located at the host CPU or at a separate computing device can provide an interface between the host CPU and the hardware coprocessor, thus reducing communications between the host CPU and the hardware coprocessor.
