An air ionizer (10) has at least two electrodes (26) contained within a recessed region (18) of an insulating housing (12). When high voltages are applied to the electrodes (26), nearby air molecules are ionized and generally move towards a target region outside the housing (12). Because the insulating housing shields the electrodes (26) the production of ions is not significantly disturbed by charged or grounded objects other than those in the general direction of the target region. In one embodiment, the electrodes (26) are placed close enough to the inner walls of the recessed region (18) that the portions of the surfaces of the walls near the electrodes (26) are electrostatically charged. This charge tends to repel the nearby ions, expelling many from the recessed region (18) towards the target region.

Germanium needles are used as emitter electrodes (12) for use in low particle generating gas ionizers in general and static eliminators in particular. They oxidize with minimal incorporation of nitrogen, and the negative polarity emitters oxidize at a greater rate than the positive polarity emitters. Negative polarity silicon emitters generate several orders of magnitude greater particle emissions than either positive or negative germanium electrodes. The mean particle size is about 0.015 µm. No particles were shed from these needles. Lowest particle generation is achieved when germanium electrodes are purged with dry air.

Charge eliminating apparatus for a moving web comprising two voltage applicators (16, 18) with discharge electrodes (28A, 32A) arranged at uniform intervals is disclosed. The voltage applicators (16, 18) are provided against the web (22) supported by a backing roller (12) or two backing rollers (12, 14). The distance (L) between each voltage applicators (16, 18) is settled to be small, and the discharge electrodes (28A, 32A) are connected to high voltage power sources (30, 34). By applying D.C. voltage to the web (22), electrostatic charges on the web (22) are efficiently eliminated.

An apparatus for removing flashes on pieces of plastic by blasting with plastic granules consists of a conveyor to move the plastic pieces, a blasting device which pelts the pieces of plastic with plastic granules, a collector, conveyor and separator to handle the plastic granules, and a means of removing from the plastic granules the static charge generated by the process. To devise this apparatus with an inexpensive means of effecting a static discharge of the plastic granules, it is proposed that ion spray rods and/or ion spray jets (13) be distributed over the circuit as a means of neutralizing the static charge on the plastic granules (12, 14, 15).
