The invention relates to apparatus and methods for catalytic purification of gas emissions, in particular to the purification of gas emissions from nitrogen oxides NO x and carbon monoxide CO. The apparatus for the purification of gas emissions comprises two sequentially located CO oxidation and NO x reduction catalysts with the load of catalytic grains (6) which are located between the small-meshed grids (5) and plates (13, 14) and which during the purification of gas emissions operate as a fluidized bed (10) created by the influence of the high voltage electric field on the catalytic load. The catalytic grains consist of the substrate material, such as lightweight expanded clay aggregate or the volcanic stone, coated with an active layer of transition metal oxides, such as bimetallic or polymetallic oxide coating. The fluidized bed created under the influence of the electric field ensures good contact between the catalytic grains and the gas flow components CO and NO x thus providing an effective conversion of the latter to carbon dioxide CO 2 and molecular nitrogen N 2 .

The present invention relates to a method for production of silane where particulate quartz in a fluidized bed is treated with a gas containing hydrogen at a temperature below 0° C., with the quartz in the fluidized bed subjected to an alternating electric field having a frequency equal to the intrinsic resonant frequency of at least a part of the quartz particles to create vibrational energy in the particles, thereby causing a chemical reaction between quartz and hydrogen to produce silane. A method and an apparatus (50) for producing direct reduced iron (37) from dry pellets (25) composed of iron oxide and carbonaceous material. A mixture of pellets (25) and free coke particles (38) with weight relation from 3:1 to 5:1 is fed into the top of an electrothermal fluidized bed (32) that is fluidized by nitrogen. By exposing pellets (25) in the electrothermal fluidized bed (32)to temperatures of between approximately 850-1,100°C for an average period of between approximately 15-60 minutes, the volatiles are removed and the pellets (25) metallized. Reduced pellets (37) mixed with free coke (38) are discharged from the bottom of fluidized bed (32) and cooled. The reduced iron pellets (37)are physically separated from any free coke (38) and the free coke (38) is recycled back into the fluidized bed (32).

To improve the utilization of energy and the introduction of the microwave radiation, a first gas or gas mixture is introduced from below through a preferably central gas supply tube (3) into a mixing chamber (7) of the reactor, the gas supply tube (3) being at least partly surrounded by a stationary annular fluidized bed (8) which is fluidized by supplying fluidizing gas. The subject reactors (10) comprise a centrally positioned heating means (e.g. a susceptor rod (12)) that, during operation, is at least partially immersed in a fluidized bed of particles (16). Preferably the susceptor rod (12) is heated by externally positioned radio-frequency coils in operational relationship with an RF source (18). The subject reactors are further characterized in that, during use, a temperature gradient is produced within the reactor. The subject reactors find use in the production of electronic grade silicon and in the silica coating of titania particles.

An improved fluid bed furnace is disclosed which is useful in heat treating products or particles which are to undergo a change due to exposure to high temperatures. The bed is heated by lamps effectively buried in the bed radiating energy to the fluidized particles. In one embodiment, the lamps are protected by a ceramic tube with the lamps heating the tubes which in turn heat the fluid bed.
