A method and apparatus for detecting the presence or absence of an undesirable fluid, such as water, in a pipeline (10) and for removing the undesirable fluid are disclosed. A detecting substance, for example, sugar, naphthalene or a pigmented solid is carried by a sweeping pig (20) The sweeping pig (20) is inserted into the pipeline (10), propelled along the pipeline and recovered from the pipeline. The detecting substance is examined upon recovery of the sweeping pig (20) to determine whether the undesirable fluid is present in the pipeline (10). The pipeline (10) can be swept multiple times until examination of the detecting substance indicates that the undesirable e fluid is not present in the pipeline (10).

A core member (78) may also be inserted through the opening in the helix-like configuration and attached at one or more points of the base member (2) permitting the cleaning device (1) to be pushed through tubular members (45).

A particularly preferred mixture comprises a mass of comminuted ice, which is sufficiently flowable, plastic and divisible to pass readily through channels of many different shapes and sizes, to flow past internal obstructions, and to negotiate the branching or merging of channels. Its also has the significant advantages of low cost, and ease and safety of preparation.
