The process comprises: inserting a batch of non-spongy/foam thermoplastic material having a greater density than 0.9 Kg/dm3, in the solid state and in small pieces, into the cavity of the female component, supplying heat to the parts of the die, up to producing at least a partial melting of the batch located in the cavity of the die, nearing the two parts of the die to one another, by action of a thrust able to deform the batch in the at least partially molten state, the movement leading to a reduction of a distance between the upper mouth and the peripheral edge up to reciprocal contact thereof.

The present application relates to a method and system that can be utilized to manufacturing composite (311) structures in a closed cavity mold (303, 305). The tool system (301) includes a closed cavity tool with spring members (323) that when in compression apply pressure to a preform located within the closed cavity mold (303, 305). During a curing cycle, the spring members (323) provide substantially constant pressure to the preform, thereby preventing voids and porosity in the cured composite structure. Further, the substantially constant pressure, provided by the spring members (323), acts to more effectively conform the preform to the geometry defined by a void in the closed cavity mold (303, 305) during the curing cycle.

Methods and systems are provided for making an ophthalmic lens. The present methods and systems are effecting in coupling two mold sections together at two or more discrete regions (57). Embodiments of the methods and systems form a bore (57) that extends completely through one of the mold sections (22) and only partially through the other mold section (24). During formation of the bore, the mold material in proximity to the bore being formed becomes molten and diffuses from the bore. A portion of the molten mold material is provided at a contact point between the two mold sections and when the molten material cools, the material forms a spot weld between the mold sections. By forming multiple hollow spot welds in a mold assembly, the two mold sections can be securely coupled to each other during the manufacture of an ophthalmic lens, such as a silicone hydrogel contact lens.
