The cooperating formations interlock and rollers (9) are thereby handed over smoothly from one segment to the next irrespective of slight variations in alignment due to manufacturing tolerance or wear. The segments form a wavelike cam surface and attachment means (3) are provided, through the working surface, on whichever of the leading or trailing surfaces thereof is subject to lowest forces from pistons in use.

The cam slots (112) in the cam bars (102) are profiled such that the cam followers (106) affect the speed and force at which the valve stems (110) travel. The cam followers (106) of the actuation plate (108) travel in cam slots (112) in the cam bars (102) from a valve stem forward position, to a valve stem retracted position. The actuation plate (108) may be removed from the cam bars (102) via open ended slots in the cam bars (102).

A displacement conversion mechanism comprises an assembly (23) of two nested coil springs (1,11), having cam means (2,3,12,13) on their opposed faces, the cam means being arranged to act upon the turns of the coil springs to link rotational displacement of the coil springs relative to each other with a translational displacement related to an alteration in length of the coil assembly. An actuator is formed by combining the displacement mechanism with a drive motor for rotatably driving one of the springs relative to the other. An alternative mechanism comprises an assembly including a driver and driven discoidal elements having a ramped surface, the ramped surfaces which are complementarily shaped and opposed so that, when completely interengaged, they form an assembly of minimum length. The elements are mounted such that a rotational displacement of the drive element by an externally applied force causes the elements to separate by camming action of the interengaged ramp surfaces to produce a proportional linear displacement of the driven element. A resilient bias means coupled to the driven element restores the assembly to its minimum length in the absence of the externally applied force.
