A laser print head structure includes a laser diode array (14) coupled to a heat sink (10). A cylindrical lens element (20) is aligned with the laser diode array and bonded to the heat sink. A binary optical element (22) is then aligned with the cylindrical lens element and attached to the heat sink through the use of flexures (24). The use of the flexures permits the binary optical element to "float" in the plane of the laser diode array, thereby maintaining alignment even when the thermal expansion characteristics of the binary optical element are different from the thermal expansion characteristics of the heat sink. Anti-wicking slots (18) are provided in the heat sink at locations between the bonding points of the cylindrical lens element and the laser diode array. The anti-wicking slots, through capillary action, prevent excess adhesive from wicking along the cylindrical lens element and onto the facets of the lasers in the laser diode array. In addition, the flexures are provided with holes (28) to permit light to pass through the flexures to a light curable resin which is used to bond the flexures to the heat sink.

Print enhancement circuitry (421) to enhance the printed image produced by a laser beam printer is interposed between the character generator circuits (411) and the laser drive circuits (391) to modify the laser drive signals provided by the character generator circuits (411). Bit data representing successive lines of the bit map for a desired image are stored in a first-in first-out (FIFO) buffer (101). The bit pattern sample window (109) having a central cell (bit) (111) and a selected (arbitrary) number of neighboring bits is compared to a number of matching bit patterns or templates (77-95), each of which is associated with an error element or cell. When a logic matching network (103) detects a match, a modification signal associated with a unique compensation cell (bit) (121-135) is generated. The sample window central bit (111) is then replaced (modified) with the unique compensation bit required by the matching template. In this manner, all bits in a desired bit map (90), or set of bit maps, are examined and their corresponding laser drive signals modified to compensate for the errors associated with the matched templates in a piece-wise manner.

A thermal printer (50) is disclosed in which a plurality of lasers (52) are used to generate an image on a receiver in a multi-line mode of operation. Each of the lasers (52) has its output light directed through a separate optical fiber (54). Output ends of the optical fibers (54) are closely and accurately spaced in a grooved array support (56). All output beams from the optical fibers (54) are simultaneously scanned across receiver as each of the beams is individually modulated in accordance with image formation data. An image is formed with a plurality of image lines being generated substantially simultaneously. The printer has a faster operating speed than prior art laser thermal printers. Additionally, the printer is less expensive because it employs a less complex optical system than the prior art printers.

A beam scanning galvanometer (44) is disclosed which oscillates a mirror (60) in a non-resonant mode. The moving parts of the galvanometer are made with as small a moment of inertia as possible because the mirror is oscillated in a non-resonant mode. The galvanometer uses two sets of crossed leaf-springs (70) to support the mirror instead of bearings which are usually used in non-resonant galvanometers. Each of the sets of leaf-springs is formed of a single strip of cold rolled stainless steel. The springs are embedded in uniquely shaped cavities in a permanent magnet (62) that supports the mirror at a distance very close to an axis of rotation of the mirror. The mirror is specially shaped with beveled edges so that its moment of inertia is low and so that it can oscillate in very close proximity to a driving current coil (64) which surrounds the mirror supporting magnet. A magnetic position sensor (90) is used to detect an angular position of the mirror during operation of the galvanometer. A compensating system eliminates distorting magnetic field effects from a magnetic driving system from adversely influencing the magnetic position sensor. Signals from the magnetic position sensor are usable to provide accurate feedback information to a galvanometer driving system.

The present invention allows image recording with plural light beams while eliminating alignment changes of light spots on the inner face of a drum. A light beam output unit 212 combines two circularly polarized light beams having opposite handedness to each other to produce a composite light beam CB. A polarization beam splitter 203 and mirrors 205 and 207 change the course of the light beam towards the inner face of a drum 120. A quarter-wave plate 202 and the polarization beam splitter 203 splits the composite light beam to two separate light beams as a function of the handedness of the circularly polarized light. The optical elements 202, 203, 205, and 207 are integrally rotated around the axis of the drum 120 by a main scanning motor 230, thus scanning a photosensitive material 110 held on the inner face of the drum 120 with the light beams.

There is provided an outputting method in a laser beam printer or the like which handles binary data or multivalue data and can express a density of a half tone. A capacity of a memory provided in the printer is detected and the gradation number of multivalue image data is changed or reduced into a small gradation number of e.g., binary data in accordance with the memory capacity. A part of the input multivalue image data is set into the white or black binary data. Thus, an image of a high quality can be promptly generated at a high precision and a data amount can be reduced.
