An end wall for beverage containers, in which the end wall has a center section (15) extending across its width, and reduced thickness side sections (13,14) on opposite sides of the center section, thereby enabling the end wall to be manufactured with less material than is required in conventional end wall constructions. The center section is of the same thickness as used in conventional container end walls, and is able to support a pull tab (16) and associated pull ring (17), while at the same time reinforcing the end wall. The reduced thickness side sections (13,14) are only about one-half as thick as the center section (15), and all shaping to produce the reduced thickness is performed on the top surface of the end wall, so that the underside remains flat.

The tear tab is separable from the container end wall (W) along a frangible score line (20) to form the opening, and a pull ring (12) is attached to the tear tab to pull it back from the end wall to form the opening, with the tear tab remaining captive on the container. A vertical fold (14) is formed in the container end wall (W) adjacent the score line to provide a shield to protect the user from the severed edge of the tear tab after it is opened along the score line.

A method for manufacturing a cover for a can-like container providing improved peelability of a handle. The cover is made by forming a second resin layer by injection molding or compression forming on a multi-layer sheet which oxygen, water, and the like cannot permeate. A thermally weldable first resin layer is provided on the upper surface of the multi-layer sheet. The handle is formed by the second resin layer. A treatment is carried out for allowing the handle to be easily peeled off the multi-layer sheet to all or part of a region of the multi-layer sheet in contact with the underside of the handle.

The resulting convenience-feature endwall panel is separated such that substantially no obstruction to removal of solid-pack contents as a single piece remains. An elongated, longitudinally-rigid integral opener (148) is placed at a selected designated location on non-circular configuration endwall panels which, in cooperation with novel shaping of chuck wall tooling (170), enables desired chuck wall support, free of registry concerns, during chime seam assembly of the end closure with a container body of matching non-cylindrical configuration.

This invention relates to an easily openable lid for a container. A lid body made of a laminate of a metal foil layer and a resin layer and having a weakened line for lid opening is provided, at at least that part of the laminate which is on the outer circumferential side of that part of an inwardly introduced weakened line which projects farthest in the lid opening initiating direction, with a reinforcing layer of a thermoplastic resin which extends across and covers this weakened line, and which is independent of the resin layer in the laminate. This can prevent the breakage of a ribbon effectively, and enables the lid to be cut and opened without fail smoothly along the weakened line.

Opening arrangements for packing containers of the type which comprise a tearing or pulling device applied to the outside of the packing container are known. By means of the pulling device a part of the wall material of the packing container can be removed so that a pouring opening is generated. To prevent the packing laminate from delaminating on opening, so that only the outer layer accompanies the pulling device, it is proposed in accordance with the invention to design the opening part (2) so that a penetrating part (13) is first thrust downwards through the laminate, whereupon the opening part (2) with the penetrating part (13) and the underlying, breached part of the packing laminate is lifted upwards so that a pouring opening is generated.

The tab seat is disposed in spaced relation to said upper surface of the bottom and disposed in such a manner that a score portion (30) having as small a width as possible is formed between the outer periphery of the tab seat and the inner peripheral edge of said reinforcing thermoplastic resin layer. The upper surface of said bottom is exposed through the score portion.
