A vehicle security device for improving the security level of a vehicle. The vehicle security device (11) is connected to an engine (16) and communicates with a portable device (11). A smart ECU (13) performs a first coded communication to establish mutual authentication with the portable device. An ID code box (14) is connected to the smart ECU, has a first code and a second code, and does not communicate with the portable device. The ID code box performs a second coded communication using the first code to establish a second mutual authentication with the smart ECU. An engine ECU (15) performs a third coded communication using the second code to establish a third mutual authentication with the ID code box. The engine ECU enables the engine to be started when every one of the first, second, and third mutual authentications are established.

Thus, a space around knees can be increased while sufficiently securing a collapse stroke, and excellent steerability can be maintained by preventing the resonance of the steering wheel resulting from the lowering of the natural frequency of a steering column while reducing the weight of the device.

A first transmitting antenna (10) transmits an ID request and a receiving antenna (18) receives a response from a portable device. The received response includes an ID, which is checked with IDs stored in a memory (28). If the checking is successful, the lock is opened by a door lock (30). Contrarily, if the checking fails several times continuously, transmission of the ID request from the first transmitting antenna (10) is suspended for a predetermined time. Thereby even if the ID request competes with the ID request from a second vehicle, the portable device can respond the ID request from the second vehicle. Transmission of an ID request is preferably inhibited by judging the request to be fraudulent when the checking fails several times continuously.

A system ECU (19) reads an ID code stored in an IC card (2) through communication means (24) to output a permission code to knob turning prohibiting means (27) when the IC card (2) is judged to be regular, and to stop outputting of the permission code when an ignition knob (23) is operated to a LOCK position in a state where the permission code is being outputted. The knob turning prohibiting means (27) prohibits turning of the ignition knob (23), and permits turning of the ignition knob (23) in a state where the permission code is being inputted. Steering lock unlocking means (28) cancels a turning prohibiting state imposed on a steering shaft by steering locking means (29) in a state where ignition knob (23) is operated to other positions than the LOCK position.
