The array can be geometrically configured or electrically operated by strobing or varying the brightness of individual pixels (71) to compensate for other system optical deficiencies and results in improved printing process. By exposure strobing the LED source correction for fuzzy line edges can be achieved.

The system is particularly useful for presenting DMD images to the printing drum (28) of a xerographic process for letter quality documents. Registration of an image with respect to a recording medium in a film recorder or the like is provided by first roughly positioning the recording medium in a support. A beam is then scanned across an unused portion of the recording medium until it impinges a fixed reference mark such as a sprocket hole edge. The coordinates of the beam are determined at the reference mark, and a registration signal is computed therefrom. The beam is then scanned across the recording medium in response to the registration signal to record information in registered relation to the reference mark. An intensity profile of the beam is calculated as it passes over an edge of the recording medium. The focus of the beam is then adjusted according to the intensity profile. Adjustment of both beam focus and lens focus is provided.

There is disclosed a system for enhancing resolution of a xerographic process by submodulation of each individual pixel (20). The submodulation is achieved by anamorphically reducing the square pixel presentation of light rays (201) to a rectangle having a number of controllable segments within each pixel scan line. By controlling the presentation of light rays to selected segments within each pixel gray scale an enhanced resolution can be achieved.

The present invention provides an imaging device and method for developing, duplicating and printing graphic media. The imaging device of the present invention is utilized in devices such as copiers, printers, game cards and the like, and comprises a substrate bearing an infrared image producing layer, a thermal image forming layer and a light source. A brief but intense flash of visible light from the light source causes latent heat properties of the infrared layer to generate heat and convert visible light into far infrared light. This far infrared light develops or marks portions of the thermal layer which are adjacent the infrared layer.

An exposure system for electrophotographic apparatus having an aperture plate for masking one or more laser beams. The plate (30) contains one or more apertures (52, 54, 56) which have irregular edges to form a gaussian light distribution for the light beams passing through the apertures. A saw-toothed edge is used with a predetermined amplitude ratio to predictably attenuate the light at the edges which correspond to the process or in-track direction in the exposed image. The gaussian distribution is more tolerable of spacing changes in scan lines and improves the continuity of process direction lines in the finished image.
