Das Vorschaltgerät weist zwei Schalter (S1,S2) auf, die in Reihe an die Wechselstrom-Versorgung angeschlossen sind und invers zueinander betrieben werden können. An diese Schalteranordnung ist eine Reihenschaltung aus einer Induktivität (L) und einer Entladungslampe (EL) angeschlossen. Die Entladungslampe (EL) wird durch einen dritten Schalter (S3) überbrückt. Solange die Amplitude der Versorgungsspannung (U N ) einen Grenzwert unterschreitet, wird der dritte Schalter (S3) bei leitendem ersten Schalter (S1) innerhalb einer Halbwelle der Versorgungsspannung mehrfach ein- und ausgeschaltet. Dadurch wird erreicht, daß in denjenigen Bereichen der Halbwelle, in denen normalerweise die Lampe erlöschen würde, weil die Versorgungsspannung nicht ausreicht, durch die Induktivität (L) eine genügend hohe Spannung für den Lampenbetrieb zur Verfügung gestellt wird. Durch Änderung des Tastverhältnisses der Impulse kann die während einer Halbwelle zur Lampe übertragene Leistung entsprechend einer gewünschten Leistungskurve verändert werden.

Sie ist für allgemeine Beleuchtungsaufgaben geeignet, weist eine Farbtemperatur im Bereich 3000 ... 4000 K auf und kann für einen weiter Leistungsbereich, insbesondere auch für sehr niedrige Leistungen, ausgelegt werden. Es wird eine Entladung in Caesium oder Rubidium ausgenutzt, deren Plasma mit leistungsstarken Impulsen hoher Folgefrequenz und kleinem Tastverhältnis so weit aufgeheizt wird, daß das über den sichtbaren Spektralbereich verteilte Rekombinatikonskontinuum mit hoher Intensität abgestrahlt wird und daß diese die Intensität der Linienstrahlung in den lichttechnische unwirksamen Spektralbereichen übertrifft.

According to the invention, a fluorescent tube is powered by a ballast system comprising a transformer connected to an AC power source via a rectifying diode. The primary winding of the transformer is connected in series with the power source and filament of the tube via a capacitor. The secondary winding of transformer is connected to in positive feed-back relation with the base (44) and emitter (42)-of a transistor. The collector of the transistor is connected to the capacitor. The second capacitor is connected in series with the transformer secondary winding to apply a pulse voltage to the second filament of the tube.

A converter circuit for addition to the existing lamp operating circuitry of a high pressure mercury lamp consisting of an existing series ballast inductor (L) and a power factor correcting capacitor (C) connected across the input terminals of the existing lamp operating circuit includes inductance (L,) arranged to be connected to the ballast inductor (L) to as to adjust the resultant series inductance to a value suitable for a sodium lamp (SON), and an igniter portion (A) coupled to the converter inductance (L 1 ). The igniter portion (A) operates to apply ignition voltage to the sodium lamp (SON) during at least part of the time that the converter circuit is aupplied with power. Protective circuitry (B) is coupled to the converter inductance (L,) to block or limit high frequency voltage pulses which could otherwise reach the ballast inductor (L). The circuit can be used to convert high pressure mercury lamp operating circuits into a circuit suitable for operating either a high pressure or a low pressure sodium lamp by appropriate choice of the converter inductance (L,) and other converter circuit components.

In a gas discharge lamp, when the current through the inductor (17) has increased to a point where the voltage drop across the resistor (15) exceeds the voltage of the reference source (23, 24), the comparator amplifier (20) triggers the monostabile multivibrator (18) causing the solid state switching device (14) to be turned off. This acts to collapse the magnetic field in the inductor (17) thereby causing a large flyback voltage to appear across the lamp (11) sufficient to light the lamp. At the end of the predetermined time period of the low output state of the monostabile multivibrator (18), its output turns the solid state switching device (14) on, allowing current to flow from the power supply (16) through the inductor (17) and the lamp (11), thereby maintaining the lamp in the lit state and increasing the magnetic field in the inductor (17). The current flow through the lamp, when the solid state switching device (14) is on, is in the opposite direction from the current flowing through the lamp when the solid state switching device is off.
