The anode comprises at least one dimensionally stable elongated anode strip at right angles to the cathode surface direction of movement. The anode strip is laterally flexible and has a formed, first configuration. A support means supports the anode strip and flexes the anode strip into a second supported configuration which is different from the formed first configuration. The anode strip in the second supported configuration is uniformly spaced from the cathode. The invention is particularly applicable to a radial cell (10) in which a plurality of anode strips (32) are positioned in an arc circumferentially around the cell cathode (12).

The present invention comprises a closed-loop filter system for continuously removing a metal hydroxide precipitate from an alkali metal hydroxide solution. The filter system comprises a filter having a filter surface and a plurality of small diameter openings in said surface. The alkali metal hydroxide solution is impacted onto said filter surface, metal hydroxide precipitate agglomerating on said surface. The filter surface openings have an average diameter effective for said agglomerating. Means are provided to remove the agglomerated precipitate from said filter surface, and to separate the agglomerated precipitate from the alkali metal hydroxide solution, the agglomerated precipitate having a particle weight to surface area ratio effective for said separation.

A metal surface is now described having enhanced adhesion of subsequently applied coatings. The substrate metal of the article, such as a valve metal as represented by titanium, is provided with a highly desirable surface characteristic for subsequent coating application. This can be initiated by selection of a metal of desirable metallurgy and heat history, including prior heat treatment to provide surface grain boundaries which may be most readily etched. In subsequent etching operation, the surface is made to exhibit well defined, three dimensional grains with deep grain boundaries. Subsequently applied coatings, by penetrating into the etched intergranular valleys, are desirably locked onto the metal substrate surface and provide enhanced lifetime even in rugged commercial environments.

The present invention resides in a metal-air battery consisting of one or more cells. Each cell comprises a cell frame (40). An air cathode (52,54) is attached to each face of the frame. An anode blank (12) is inserted through an access opening (60) in the frame into the space between the cathodes (52,54). The anode blank (62) comprises an elastomeric rubber labyrinth seal (68) molded to the blank and sealing the access opening (60). Means (92,94) may be provided for circulating electrolyte into and out of the spaces between the anode and air cathodes. A preferred electrolyte is an aqueous solution of an alkali hydroxide.

A cathodic protection system for steel reinforced concrete and having ease of installation has now been developed. The system relies on metal anode ribbon elements, with current distributor members for such elements that are typically of the same or similar metal. The ribbon elements can be long, thin strips, e.g., they may be conveniently brought to the work site in coiled form, and deployed on the concrete surface or in slots in continuous manner. The system provides for economy of installation even under inclement weather conditions. Anode ribbon elements and current feeders may be readily connected in the field during installation, as by spot welding.

A bipolar battery assembly of the consumable metal anode type is described. Contact between internal battery elements is now enhanced by air assisted, internally exerted compressive force. Battery elements are constructed in modular manner that assists in the ease of battery assembly and disassembly. Furthermore, ease of anode replenishment is maintained. A multitude of individual cells can now be joined together in an efficient bipolar assembly cell stack for augmented electrical energy generation. In addition to being bipolar, the battery is of rugged construction, providing for dependable, long-life operation that is desirably maintenance-free.
