An electric rear wheel steering apparatus provided with an electromagnetic clutch (12) between a motor (11) for driving rear wheels (9) and a worm reduction gear (13) having a reversion efficiency of zero or lower, and a control unit (20) adapted to cut off an electric current flowing to the motor (11) and disengage the electromagnetic clutch (12) when an abnormal operation other than a predetermined operation is ascertained. When an abnormal operation is detected, the rear wheel steering gear is fixed in the actual position by a control operation of the control unit (20), so that the rear wheels are prevented from becoming incontrollable.

A control device allows the hydraulically assisted steering force to be varied in function of the vehicle speed. At low speed, the hydraulic power assistance is strongly boosted, and is increasingly reduced with increasing speed. The control device comprises an electronic switchgear (10) which controls the flow through an adjustable choke (7), for example a magnetic value, in function of a speedometer signal. The adjustable choke (7) is lodged in a supply line (3) of a power-assisted steering (4, 5, 6). A manometric switch (14) arranged in the supply line (3) downstream of the adjustable choke (7) can supply a control signal to the switchgear (10). If the driver swerves suddenly at high speed in an emergency, the pressure drop causes the manometric switch (14) to actuate the switchgear (10), which in turn opens the adjustable choke (7). This boosts the power-assist function and ensures that the sudden steering movement can be executed safely.

A power steering apparatus wherein, when action of a hydraulic actuator of a source for steering assisting power is converted into steering motion, the steering momentum obtained in response to a specified magnitude of operation of the hydraulic actuator is larger at the central side of a rotation range of a steering wheel than at the end side thereof. The steering assisting power becomes larger as the steering angle becomes larger. As a result, when the steering wheel is largely operated, a burden of labor for steering is largely reduced without expecting an increase in capacity of the hydraulic actuator.
