A wireless process communication adapter is provided. The adapter includes a housing having a plurality of openings. An end cap is coupled to a first opening of the plurality of openings. A field device coupling is disposed at the second of the plurality of openings. The housing, end cap and field device coupling define a chamber therein. At least one circuit board is disposed within the chamber, the circuit board has wireless communication circuitry disposed thereon and is coupleable to a field device through the field device coupling. In one aspect, substantially all remaining volume in the chamber is filled with a solid material. In another aspect, an explosion-proof barrier is provided in the field device coupling. Combinations of the aspects are also provided.

A process fluid temperature sensor is coupled to the process fluid pressure transmitter. A field device detects the presence of fluid in the terminal block area of the field device by generating an alternating current (AC) test current signal and measuring the amplitude of the resulting AC voltage signal. The field device includes a first terminal and a second terminal adapted for connection to a control room through a twisted-wire pair current loop. Impedance of the current loop is increased by the presence of fluid between the first terminal and the second terminal. By providing an AC test current signal to the control loop and measuring a resulting AC voltage magnitude, the impedance of the control loop can be determined. Increased impedance in the control loop indicates the presence of water in the terminal block.

A process fluid sensor 104 for sensing a characteristic of a process fluid is provided. The process fluid sensor 104 includes a metallic sensor body 150 that defines a chamber therein. A piezoelectric crystal element 160 is disposed proximate the chamber and is configured to generate an electrical signal in response to a mechanical input. The piezoelectric crystal element 160 is mechanically coupleable to the process fluid, but is sealed within the sensor body 150 with the exception of a gaseous pathway (164). A vortex flowmeter (100) utilizing the process fluid sensor (104) is also provided.
