A system and method for dynamically updating software-driven features in an electronic imaging device (114), including digital cameras, is disclosed. The user of the electronic imaging device (114) may desire various features which are not supported by the baseline application program that is built into the electronic imaging device (114). In the present invention, the user may select removable memory devices to supplement the baseline application program. The user inserts the removable memory device (354) into an external connector (352) of the electronic imaging device. The computer (118) of the electronic imaging device then automatically scans the removable memory device (354) for executable software items, and displays these items in various menus as appropriate. The user may then select these items for execution without having to reboot the computer of the electronic imaging device (114). When the user is finished using the features on the removable memory device (354), he may remove it with no subsequent operator intervention required. The computer (118) of the electronic imaging device (114) then automatically removes from the appropriate menus the executable software items that had been added.

The system and method include sending an email request with the images (19) and an address of the second user (Fig.5) from the first computer (12) to a server (20). In response to receiving the email request, the images are stored on the server (28), and the server creates a standard email message (31) from the email request (19). The method and system further include inserting at least one link to the stored images (33) into the email message (31), and transmitting the email message over the network (32) for delivery to the second user (38). The second user may then receive and open the email message on the second computer (36) using the standard email program (38) and click on at least one link to display the images (40).

The present invention provides a network-based photosharing system that includes a plurality of peer nodes (16a-16d) that contain images and that are capable of communicating with other peer nodes. The method and system include allowing a user of a first one of the peer nodes (16a) to invite (30) at least one visitor to view images hosted on the first peer node, and allowing the visitor to browse the images on the first peer node and to select one or more images to print by filling-out a print request form (32) that identifies only the visitor and the selected images. The method and system further include notifying the user of the submission of the print request form, wherein once notified, the user accesses the print request form, prints the selected images, and delivers the prints to the visitor.

The method and system (110) includes organizing the predetermined number of speculation buffers based upon the selected images so as to assign each of the predetermined number of speculation buffers to store one of the plurality of images in response to the scrolling method. In second aspect, the image capture unit (114) operates in a plurality of modes. The image capture unit (114) also includes a plurality of input buffers which are utilizing one of the plurality of modes and are unutilized on at least one of the other of the plurality of modes. The method and system (110) in accordance with this aspect comprises reallocating the input buffers as speculation buffers and providing image data from the image files to the speculation buffers when the image capture unit (110) is in the at least one of the plurality of modes.
