A tablet splitting apparatus capable of reducing fluctuations in weight of split tablet pieces even with simple advanceable - retractable blades is provided. A holding mechanism 30 holds a tablet 10 to be split at a cutting position. In reducing the gap between a pair of opposed blades 41 and 42, which are advanced and retracted with respect to the cutting position, to cut the tablet 10, the holding mechanism 30 continuously holds the tablet 10 until the tablet 10 is caught between the pair of opposed blades 41 and 42 of a cutting mechanism 40. After the tablet 10 is caught between the pair of opposed blades 41 and 42, the holding mechanism 30 releases the tablet 10 and only the pair of opposed blades 41 and 42 hold the tablet 10. The opposed blades 41 and 42 are caused to cut into the tablet 10 after the holding mechanism 30 releases the tablet 10, preventing a crack 11 caused in the tablet 10 ahead of the opposed blades 41 and 42 from being curved or increased.
