A thin film phosphor for an electroluminescent device, the phosphor being selected from the group consisting of thioaluminates, thiogallates and thioindates having at least one cation selected from elements of Groups IIA and IIB of the Periodic Table of Elements. The phosphor being activated by a rare earth metal and containing oxygen as a partial substitute for a portion of the sulphur in the crystal lattice of the thiogallate, thioindate or thioaluminate. The phosphor is a single phase homogeneous compound and provides improved luminance stability. An electroluminescent device comprising the thin film phosphor is also described and methods of making the phosphor of the invention.

A method for the deposition of a thin film of a pre-determined composition e.g. a phosphor, onto a substrate, in which the composition is a ternary, quaternary or higher composition, especially a composition selected from the group consisting of thioaluminates, thiogallates and thioindates of at least one element from Groups IIA and IIB of the Periodic Table. In the embodiment, the method comprises placing a pellet of at least one sulphide on a first source and placing a pellet of at least one sulphide on a second source, with one pellet containing dopant. Vapour deposition onto the substrate is effected with separate electron beams. The rate of vaporizing of the sulphides is monitored with separate shielded coating rate monitors. The temperature of the sources is controlled to obtain the composition on the substrate. The method is particularly used for deposition of ternary or quaternary phosphors on substantially opaque substrates in electroluminescent devices.

A flat panel detector (20) for radiation imaging includes an array of pixels (22) arranged in rows and columns. Gate lines (24) interconnect the pixels of each row while source lines (26) interconnect the pixels of each column. A radiation transducer (CSE) is disposed over the array. Each pixel includes a TFT switch (38) having its gate electrode connected to a gate line (24) and its source electrode (42) connected to another gate line. The drain electrode (40) of TFT switch (38) constitutes the pixel electrode of pixel (22). The drain electrode and a bottom electrode (52) connected to source line (26) constitute a storage capacitor (CST). When TFT switch is biased and the drain electrode is charged, the drain electrode discharges through TFT switch on to the source terminal and to the gate line. This results in a release of the charge held by the bottom electrode which is sensed by a charge amplifier connected to the source line.

The driving circuit incorporates a resonant circuit that is able to efficiently recover capacitative energy stored on the row of pixels and transfer it to another row of pixels as the rows are addressed. The resonant circuit comprises a step down transformer, a capacitator across the priminary winding, either the rows or columns of the display panel connected acorss the secondary winding and an input voltage and FET switches to drive the resonant circuit synchronous with the timing pulses governing the addressing of the display. The improvement of the present invention is an additional secondary winding that is connected to a rectifier and DC storage capacitor that is connected in series with the rows of columns of the panel. The additional circuit facilitates clamping of the driver voltage to a constant level irrespective of variations in the load due to the fluctuations in load impedance.

The invention relates to improving the stability of the lower electrodes in an electroluminescent display employing a thick film dielectric. The invention is an encapsulated electrode comprising an electrode of an electrically conductive metallic film. A layer of encapsulating material is provided on an upper and/or lower surface of the electrode layer. The encapsulating material reduces the risk of the electrode from becoming discontinuous and losing its electrical conductivity.

A flat panel detector (20) for radiation imaging includes an array of transistor switches (38) each of which is associated with a pixel electrode (36). A radiation transducer (CSE) including a top electrode (72) and a radiation conversion layer (70) is disposed over the array. Means are positioned over dead zones between adjacent pixel electrodes to inhibit the accumulation of charge in the radiation conversion layer at the dead zones when the top electrode is biased and the flat panel detector is exposed to radiation. In one embodiment, the inhibiting means is constituted by islands (64) formed of semiconductor material between the array and the radiation transducer. Each island is positioned over a dead zone between adjacent pixel electrodes and contacts a pixel electrode to allow charges accumulated on the islands to drift to the pixel electrodes.
