A hydrogenation catalyst has an active mass comprising nickel, copper and manganese deposited on a support comprising at least 90% by weight of silicon dioxide. The support has a BET surface area in the range from 190 to 370 m 2 /g. The catalyst has improved product selectivity in the catalytic hydrogenation of aldehydes to alcohols, and retains its high selectivity at the high temperatures.

The present invention relates to an improved supported nickel-copper-manganese-catalyst which is characterized by the presence of a phosphor compound for the preparation of alcohols by hydrogenation of the corresponding aldehydes and ketones. Such supported catalysts exhibit a superior yield and selectivity.

Ketones of the formula II where A is optionally alkyl-substituted C 2 -C 12 -alkanediyl, R 1 and R 2 are each, independently of one another, C 1 -C 6 -alkyl, or R 1 and R 2 together form optionally alkyl-substituted C 3 -C 10 -alkanediyl, and R 3 is hydrogen or C 1 -C 6 -alkyl, are prepared by reacting a cyclic olefin of the formula I with dinitrogen monoxide to form the ketone of the formula II. The ketone of the formula II can be further hydrogenated to form the saturated ketone of the formula III. Macrocyclic ketones of the formula III, e.g. muscone, are sought after as fragrances.
