The invention relates to a grinding center for the simultaneous grinding of a plurality of main and rod bearings and/or central and end-side sections of crankshafts (22). Two main bearing grinding spindles (14, 15), of which the first is movable only in the Z-direction and the second only insignificantly movable in the X-direction, are mounted on a common rod bearing-compound slide (11). In the final phase of grinding, a correction of variations in size between the two processed rod bearings occurs via a separated drive of the second rod bearing-grinding spindle (15) in accordance with a size or roundness correction. The variations are detected by measuring devices. An inclined profiled grinding wheel is provided for the grinding of the end sections.

Disclosed is a method for grinding a machine part that is used as a drive shaft, for example, rotates about the longitudinal axis thereof during the grinding process, and is provided with a journal at one axial end thereof and a recess at the opposite end thereof. The grinding process is carried out in one and the same grinding machine. In said grinding method, the machine part is brought into different clamped states by means of a chuck of a workpiece spindle head (4) with releasable clamping jaws (6) and a centering tip, a backrest (11), and/or a tailstock quill (8). Changing the clamped states has the advantage that the machine part remains in the same position in a single grinding machine, i.e. the clamped position, in all the different clamped states such that more accurate sizes, shapes, and positions can be obtained in an economical manner and all areas of the machine part which are to be ground are successively accessible to the grinding disks.

Disclosed are a method and a device for grinding a machine part (17) that comprises two shaft elements (18, 19) and a central element (20) having a significantly increased diameter (D). The central element (20) is provided with an effective surface (22), a portion of which is embodied in the form of a flat truncated cone (21). In order to grind the excess material (25) off the effective surface (22), the machine part (17) is clamped between pins (6, 7) that are provided with shafts (4, 5), the shaft (5) located at the tailstock (3) being supported by a steady rest (27). The machine part (17) is movable in the direction of the longitudinal axis (23) thereof. The effective surface (22) of the machine part (17) can be placed against the grinding disk (15) at the line of contact (28), vertical grinding being done by means of the cylindrical outer contour of the first grinding disk (15) such that the cutting speed is constant across the entire axial dimension of the first grinding disk (15) and a very good grinding result is obtained. The first grinding disk (15) is mounted in a floating manner on a grinding spindle (14) along with a second, narrower grinding disk (16). The second grinding disk (16) can be brought into an operating position, in which the cylindrical peripheral areas of the machine part are to be machined by means of longitudinal grinding, by swiveling the spindle (14) about two swiveling axes that are located perpendicular to each other and by displacing the grinding spindle (14) perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (23), the machine part remaining in the same clamped position. The inventive working method results in shortened cycle times while providing for a very good grinding result.

During centerless cylindrical grinding, attention must be paid to the fact that the workpiece (3) is placed in a very specific position between the grinding wheel (1), the regulating wheel (2) and the support guide (4). The optimal position of the workpiece (3) initially set cannot be maintained as a result of the progression of the grinding process and the changes caused by said process in the diameter and contour of the workpiece (3). The invention provides a solution to said problem, whereby height adjustment and/or the oblique position of the support guide (4) are automatically modified in accordance with the progression of the grinding process and during said grinding process with the purpose of achieving operationally optimal readjustment. The progression of the grinding process can be detected using measuring techniques, e.g. by measuring the diameter of the workpiece (3) or its deviation from roundness and using said measurement as output variable for adjusting the support guide (4).

During the grinding of the transmission surface (2), a repeated relative oscillating movement is carried out radially in relation to the workpiece spindle (3), between the grinding disc (4) and the gear plate (1), in such a way that the grinding region of the grinding disc (4) is moved back and forth between an inner radius (2.1) and an outer radius (2.2) of the transmission surface (2). The gear plate (1) is rotated by means of the workpiece spindle (3) in such a way that the entire transmission surface (2) is ground.
