The servo loop in the tracking servo system used for tracking the track during the movement between the tracks is interrupted and then the pickup means is moved to the object track. During the movement to the object track, the force which cancels the displacement force of the spring suspending the actuator used for tracking servo system is supplied to the actuator. After the predetermined number of tracks skipped has been counted, the servo loop is closed and the brake force is supplied to the actuator to stop the track movement.

In the constitution of the optical head, phases of wave surfaces of ±1st order diffracted lights are shifted by an amount of λ/2 with a common period by using a phase-inverted diffraction grating (701) the phase of which is inverted with a period of Dλ/(2P · NA) in a radial direction of the optical disk (107), thus causing, on the optical disk (107), sub-spots (109, 110) to be located on the same track as a main-spot (108). Taking advantage of this location, focal point shift error signals of the main-spot 108 and the sub-spots (109, 110) are added to each other with an appropriate gain ratio, thereby making it possible to cancel the disturbance which occurs in the focus error signal. Meanwhile, tracking error signals of the main-spot (108) and the sub-spots (109, 110) according to a push-pull method are subtracted from each other with an appropriate gain ratio, thereby making it possible to cancel the off-set.

Alternatively, by retaining variably the distance between the light source and the collimator lens, the distance between the light source and the collimator lens along with the light path is variably changed according to the thickness of the disk plate being inserted. Then by determining the type of the disk inserted and accordingly selectably inserting/removing the optical element, only one objective lens may be used to conform to the disk plates having different thicknesses.

A method and apparatus for optically recording information in which the phase state of each recording position of the recording film of a recording medium such as an optical disk is reversibly changed between an amorphous phase and a crystalline phase using a single laser beam, thereby optically recording information on the recording film. The recording position on the recording film is heated to the melting point thereof or more through laser beam irradiation irrespectively of the information to be recorded. After completion of the heating, in order to change the phase state of the recording film at the recording position in accordance with the information, the power and/or irradiation time of the laser beam is controlled so as to provide different times required for the temperature of the recording position to pass the crystallization temperature region of the recording film. The recording medium has at least one record of data indicative of the melting point of the recording film and data indicative of the time required to pass the crystallization temperature region for placing the recording position in the amorphous or crystalline state.
