A recoding playback apparatus and an optical disk are provided that allows reduction of a low frequency noise at a time of playback of a super resolution optical disk including small record marks whose size is below the diffractive limitation, to enhance quality of a playback signal. [Means for solution] The reflective beams from the optical disk are received by dividing into outer portion beams and a center portion beam, and a playback signal is created by combining such beams based on respective different gains. Based on received amounts of light or amounts of low frequency noise in respective light receiving regions, adjustment or determination of gain values is made, or the optical head apparatus is optically adjusted, whereby the low frequency noise is optimally suppressed. Further, a specific region is provided on the optical disk for making the foregoing adjustment.

[Object] To provide an optical recording medium that can be applied to a write-once optical recording medium having a high capacity of about 25 GB per one layer, and has good recording properties when a multilayered recording layer configuration is provided. [Solving Means] It includes a substrate 21 and two to four recording layers 221 and 222. At least one or more of these recording layers 221 and 222 are specific recording layers with a composition containing PdO and PdO 2 as well as at least one of completely oxidized In, Zn, Al and Sn (in other words, In 2 O 3 , ZnO, Al 2 O 3 and SnO 2 ). Adjacent to the specific recording layers, dielectric layers 232a and 232b of In/Al oxide layers containing at least either of In or Al as a main component are disposed.

In a multilayer optical disc having information layers conforming to a plurality of different optical disc standards, because the type of each information layer is not recorded in the other information layers, in read and write operations by a compatible optical disc device conforming to a plurality of optical disc standards, every time the information layer being accessed changes, it has.been necessary to read the type of the information layer and select a method of generating a tracking error signal adapted to the type of information layer, so access has taken time. In order to solve the above problem, in the information recording method according to the present invention, information is created regarding a plurality of information layers conforming to a plurality of different optical disc standards, and in an area in one of the information layers, said information about the other information layers is recorded.

The invention refers to an ultrafast quench based nonvolatile bistable device which consists of an active material on a passive or active substrate which changes its physical properties, after exposure to a sufficiently temporally short external perturbation causing an ultrafast quench. The perturbation can be from an external ultrashort laser pulse or ultrafast electrical pulse from an electrooptic device or any other generator of ultrashort pulses. This change of the materials properties can be detected as a change of optical properties or electrical resistance. The dielectric properties can be reverted back to their original state by the application of a heat pulse applied by an electrical heater within the device or an external laser.
