The control valve includes a valve body (52; 96) and an electromagnetic actuator (60, 61, 64; 97) for moving the valve body. Movement of the valve body is controlled according to current supplied to the actuator. The control valve also includes a fluid damper (90, 91; 59, 61) for applying fluid resistance to the valve body. The fluid resistance prevents the valve body from moving too quickly. The fluid damper therefore prevents the crank chamber pressure from being suddenly changed. Also, the fluid damper prevents the swash plate inclination from being suddenly changed. Instead of using the fluid damper, the sudden movement of the valve body may be prevented by controlling current supplied to the electromagnetic actuator.

This positively discontinues power transmission according to an applied load and maintains the discontinuation.

The circulation circuit is provided with a variable capacity type compressor, a condenser, a variable orifice device, an evaporator 4, and an accumulator 5 interposed between the evaporator 4 and the compressor 1. The accumulator 5 is used also as a silencer for preventing noise caused due to the self-excited vibration of the internal mechanism of the compressor. The variable orifice device is used as a pressure reducing device and is capable of varying the cross-sectional area of a restricted path provided therein in response to the temperature of the coolant passing through the restricted path. Therefore, it is possible to change the pressure reducing ability in accordance with the change of the flowing rate of the coolant.

Torque (Tr) acting on the drive shaft (16) represents the displacement. The apparatus includes a control valve (32), an air conditioner controller (80) and a compressor controller (77). The control valve (32) changes the compressor displacement. The air conditioner controller (80) produces a torque setting signal, which represents a target torque (Tr set ), to the compressor controller (77). The compressor controller (77) changes the valve opening based on the torque setting signal such that the actual load torque (Tr) matches the target torque value (Tr set ). Accordingly, the compressor (CP) is controlled according to the torque. The air conditioner controller (80) may send the torque setting signal to an engine controller (90), which eliminates the need for load torque maps.
