摘要:
This invention relates to methods and apparatus for marking letter mail or mail pieces to provide a fast and convenient way of determining zip code breaks in a stack of letter mail. The mail pieces have marks printed on the edges thereof indicative of the continuity of the same zip codes thereon. The marks are visible when the mail pieces are stacked. Adjacent envelopes with the same zip codes will have an edge mark at the same location, but upon the zip code changing, the next envelope will have a mark placed at a different location. Numbers in sequence can be printed on each of the letters so that a mail clerk can inspect the last letter within a zip code group to determine if there is a sufficient number of mail pieces within that zip code set to allow a postal discount. In an alternative embodiment, the markings on the side of the mail pieces are printed in a pattern so as to form numbers when a stack is viewed from the side. In addition to forming numbers, a pattern line can extend between the numbers. This allows a postal clerk to look at a stack of envelopes in a tray and from the side markings not only determine which of these envelopes are in the same zip code set, but also there would be an indication of the last number of the zip code.

A method and system are provided for providing validated labels that are attached to mail trays 36 immediately upon mail being processed by a mailer and placed in a tray. Mail lists and programs for sanitizing the mail list and sorting the mail to achieve postal discounts are stored in a mailer's processor 18, 20. A printer 22 is controlled to print addresses on documents, such as letters, that are forwarded to an inserter. A mail list stored in the processor indicates where the mail is to be sent, the class of mail, level of sortation and the contents of the mail. Tray contents are computed and appropriate labels are prepared by a label printer 34 under its control. By making the tray label print an integral part of the mail processing system, as opposed to being an adjunct to it, the providing of labels becomes more efficient, reliable and economical.

A printing system is provided that dynamically adjusts the method of printing an image based on the lightness or darkness of the medium upon which the image will be printed. The reflectivity of the medium upon which an image is to be printed is determined, and the way in which the image will be printed is adjusted based on the determined reflectivity of the medium. For lighter colored mediums, on which sufficient contrast will be provided, the image can be printed directly onto the medium. For darker colored mediums, on which the ink used to print the image will not provide enough contrast with respect to the medium to produce a reliably readable image, the method of printing the image is modified to ensure that sufficient contrast is always provided to produce a reliably readable image.

The invention makes it easier for the post office to calculate accurately terminal dues by providing information to the post regarding each piece or parcel of mail that crosses an international border. The invention also makes it easier for the post offices to calculate terminal dues by obtaining fee information from mail that is sent internationally. The foregoing is accomplished by placing an indication on the mail that the fees for delivering the mail have been paid or will be paid by a mailer who has an account with the post office; sorting the mail to find international mail; storing the fees that have been paid or will be paid for international mail; reporting the fees that have been paid for international mail to all participating post offices; and calculating the fees that are to be transferred to participating post offices.
