An acknowledgement method in a wireless communication system. Initially, a reverse supplemental channel (R-SCH) frame is received at a base station. The base station then transmits an acknowledgement (ACK) signal if quality of the received R-SCH frame is indicated as being good. A negative acknowledgement (NAK) signal is transmitted only if the received data frame is indicated as being bad but has enough energy such that, if combined with energy from retransmission of the data frame, it would be sufficient to permit correct decoding of the data frame. If the best base station is known, the acknowledgement method may reverse the transmission of the acknowledgement signals for the best base station so that only NAK signal is sent. A positive acknowledgement is assumed in the absence of an acknowledgement. This is done to minimize the transmit power requirements. Acknowledgement messages may be encoded with a block code, delayed and mixed with a Walsh code or another orthogonal sequence for channelization.

Signaling for each multicast/broadcast service is sent in group page messages in PCH slots assigned to the wireless devices and/or PCH slots designated for use for the service. Each group page message contains an identifier for a service. The designated PCH slots for different services may be overlapping to reduce the number of times the wireless devices need to wake up to receive page messages or staggered to reduce collision among the services. The wireless devices may be informed of a group page message being sent on the PCH for a given service by use of paging indicators that are assigned to the wireless devices and/or broadcast indicators that are assigned to the service. The paging indicators may be sent in QPCH slots assigned to the wireless devices and/or QPCH slots designated for use for the service. The BI bits are sent on the designated QPCH slots.

A wireless telecommunications system that includes a base station, a plurality of remote stations, a first channel for general page messages containing paging information and broadcast databurst message references, and an auxiliary channel for broadcast databurst notification indicators for the purpose of increasing standby time in remote stations configured to receive broadcast databurs messages. The auxiliary channel in one embodiment is an uncoded, on-off keying (OOK) modulated direct sequence spread spectrum signal. In another embodiment the broadcast databurst notification indicators are one or more indicator bits set on the auxiliary channel to indicate to a remote station whether it needs to examine the first channel for broadcast databurst message references. In another embodiment, broadcast databurst notification indicators are multiplexed onto a quick paging channel along with incoming page notification indicators. In another exemplary embodiment a new channel is used for transmission of the broadcast databurst notification indicators.

Data for transmission formatting may be speech data provided by vocoder (14) or different types of secondary traffic. The data organized into frames of a predetermined time duration for transmission by a microprocessor (18). The data frames are organized, depending on the data, to be at one of several data rates. Vocoder data is provided by vocoder (14) at one of several data rates and is organized in the frame according to a predetermined format. Frames may be formatted with a sharing of vocoder data with non-vocoder data to be at a highest frame data rate. Different types of non-vocoder data may be organized so as to also be at the highest frame data rate. Additional control data may be provided within the data frames to support various aspects of the transmission and recovery upon reception.

The invention relates to a communication system in which transmission takes place according to a format which permits different types of data to be combined and transmitted within a single transmission. The novel feature is that the communication system transmits variable length frames of data in packets, and that a data combining and transmission sub-system (14, 16, 18, 20) is provided so that when a frame of data does not require a complete packet for transmission, the data combining sub-system combines the frame of data with additional data to provide a complete packet. The data combining sub-system comprises input means for receiving the frame of data and the additional data and for combining the frame of data and the additional data to provide a complete packet responsive to a control signal, and control means for providing the control signal.

A novel and improved method for implementing a high-transmission-rate over-the-air interface is described. A transmit system provides an in-phase channel set (90) and a quadrature-phase channel set (92). The in-phase channel set (90) is used to provide a complete set of orthogonal medium rate control and traffic channels. The quadrature-phase channel (92) set is used to provide a high-rate supplemental channel and an extended set of medium rate channels that are orthogonal to each other and the original medium rate channels. The high-rate supplemental channel is generated over a set of medium rate channels using a short channel code. The medium rate channel are generated using a set of long channel codes.

A method and apparatus for coordinating the time at which a mobile station (5) performs searches for alternative systems to which a hard handoff will occur. In one system which includes the present invention, the mobile station (5) receives a command which indicates to the mobile station (5) a time period as to when to tune to alternative frequencies in order to search for indications of the presence of an alternative system. The mobile station (5) tunes to an alternative frequency during the time period, and collectors, stores and analyses data samples received on the alternative frequency. In another system which includes the present invention, a time period during which a mobile station (5) is to tune from an origination frequency to an alternative frequency is determined, and data received on the alternative frequency, while the mobile station (5) is tuned to that frequency, is stored. While the mobile station (5) is retuned to the origination frequency, searching for pilot signal offsets is performed based on the stored data. In another system which includes the present invention, predetermined times are defined with respect to a reference point in time that is common to both an origination base station (10) and the mobile station (5). The mobile station (5) tunes to alternative frequencies to perform searches only during these predetermined times. In addition, the mobile station (5) coordinates the transmission of reports which indicate the results of searches for alternative systems such that these reports are only transmitted from the mobile station (5) when the mobile station (5) is tuned to the origination frequency.
