Method for the use of waste, in particular solid waste, in a thermal power station wherein the primary energy is supplied by combustion of fossil fuels with input of combustion air, which said method is characterized in that it comprises combustion of the waste with an air flow suitably controlled so that combustion is approximately complete, cooling of the burnt gases by means of at least partial mixing with cold air to a pre-determined temperature which is lower than the maximum temperature compatible with cleaning, cleaning of the cooled burnt gases, and mixing of said cooled, cleaned burnt gases with the combustion air used in the power station so as to transfer a part of the thermal energy generated by waste combustion to said combustion air, the remaining part being transferred by the waste combustor cooling fluid and/or excess gas to power station boiler water recycle. Before the combustion, the solid waste may be pre-treated to give a secondary fuel; said pre-treatment comprises at least one phase of forced aerobic fermentation and one phase of metals or inerts extraction.

A method for surface reclamation of an exhausted conventional landfill of solid waste, by using urban solid waste (USW) from selective or non-selective collection, comprises the steps (a) of preparation of a bio-dried or intermediate bio-dried product from urban solid waste (USW), (b) compacting of the bio-dried product to obtain blocks (B) of predetermined shape, volume and density, (c) laying on the surface of the landfill a plurality of blocks (B) so as to form an intermediate cover layer (5) of substantially constant thickness, suitable for filtering the biogas generated by the waste stored in the landfill, (d) covering of said intermediate cover layer of blocks of bio-dried product with a surface layer (6) of cultivable soil of predetermined minimum thickness in the absence of intermediate impermeable sheets, and (e) industrial planting of said surface layer of soil with appropriate tall plant species (7) so as to allow the vegetation to take root deep down. The method allows maximisation of the total accumulation of carbon per unit of area of the landfill and minimisation of undesirable emissions, improving the environmental balance.

A description is given of a method for the use of waste, particularly municipal solid waste, in a thermoelectric power plant (100) in which the primary energy is supplied by the combustion of fossil fuels with the supply of comburent air, wherein waste is combusted in a combustion reactor (1') with appropriately controlled air flow rate, cooling and purification of the flue gases, mixing of said purified flue gases with the comburent air used in said plant, and wherein pressurised steam is produced by said reactor for waste combustion and said pressurised steam is sent directly to the cylindrical body (124) of the boiler (101) of said power plant (100), with resulting reduction in recycling of the condensates from the turbine to the boiler. A plant for implementing this method is also described.

A description is given of a process for the generation of electrical energy from waste in a dedicated plant, comprising the following phases:
combustion of the waste and generation of steam; neutralisation of fumes so as to eliminate the residual acidity of combustion; filtering of fumes so as to complete neutralisation of the fumes and eliminate the solids carried before emission at the stack; expansion in the turbine of the steam produced for the generation of electrical energy; recycling of the condensates produced by the condenser of the turbine, wherein the steam produced by combustion of the waste is saturated or slightly superheated steam which is superheated in a separate boiler prior to feeding into the turbine, said boiler being fed with natural gas and using as flue gas the purified hot fumes still containing considerable quantities of oxygen. A dedicated plant for the generation of electrical energy from waste which implements the aforesaid method is also described.

A method of energy cogeneration with a low environmental impact which involves combining a power station (100) for the production of electrical energy with a plant (200) for the combustion of waste, in particular municipal solid waste (MSW), fractions thereof, biomasses of plant origin, and the like. Power station (100) is the gas-steam combined-cycle type which includes at least one gas turbine (TG) and one steam turbine (TV) in which the steam generated by a boiler (CV) that uses the flue gases of gas turbine (TG) expands. The hot gases and steam obtained from waste combustion in said plant (200) are used together with the flue gases of gas turbine (TG) in power station boiler (CV) to generate the steam that expands in steam turbine (TV) so as to optimise global efficiency and improve the quality of the final emissions. A plant for the implementation of said method includes means for the preparation of waste for combustion (SF), means (201) for combustion of the prepared waste (SF) so as to produce hot gases and steam, means (214, 216) for cleaning said hot gases, means (213) for the introduction of the cleaned hot gases into boiler (CV) which feeds steam turbine (TV), and means (212) for introduction of the steam generated by waste combustion into the circuit of boiler (CV) which feeds steam turbine (TV).
