摘要： A television type display unit for use in a viewdata or teletext type system has a control circuit which is arranged to trigger the second of two scans which produce a picture frame such that the lines of the second scan substantially completely overlie the lines of the first scan. This arrangement removes flicker which can occur particularly when characters or graphics are being displayed on conventional displays. The result can be achieved by applying pulses to the output of the integrator of the sync separator 55 by means of a pulse generator 63. The timing of the pulses is such that the second scan overlies the first scan.

摘要： Graded index optical fibres can be made by a double crucible technique in which the refractive index gradation is induced by thermal diffusion. In fibre made from alkali- boro-alkaline earth-silica glasses, the refractive index variation in the fibre is improved if the core and cladding glass compositions are selected so that no simple ion-exchange processes occur. These fibres have improved bandwith. Preferred glass compositions for the core contain 55-65 mole per cent silica, 10-20 mole per cent boric oxide, 14 to 25 mole per cent sodium oxide, and up to 20 mole per cent of alkaline earth oxide, preferred glass composition for the cladding contain 55-65 mole per cent silica, 10-20 mole per cent boric oxide, 19-25 mole per cent sodium oxide, and the cladding glass contains the same amount or less sodium oxide than the core.

摘要： The piezoelectric properties of a polymeric material, for example polyvinylidene may be enhanced by «poling», which usually involves the application to the material, whilst at an elevated temperature, of a high voltage electric field. The enhancement is however limited by the temperature and electric field that the material can tolerate. Further enhancement is obtained by exposing the material (1) to a quantity of y radiation (4) of between 1 and 200 Mrads before «poling»; best results are obtained at an exposure level of between 1 and 100 Mrads. The treated material is suitable for use in microphone transmitters, receivers and pressure transducers.

摘要： A sorting system is disclosed, for example for mail items. In the disclosed system, a circulating storage system can receive items from an inlet, and deposit them in an appropriate output receptacle which has been allocated to items in a particular group. For example, the items can be sorted by destination, and each output receptacle can be allocated to a particular destination. In the event that the destination of an item has no output receptacle allocated thereto, the system controller can determine whether to allocate a receptacle, or whether to recirculate the item within the circulating storage system. This possibility allows items to be grouped together within the system, until there are sufficient items for a particular destination to allow them to be handled efficiently, and in particular allows the allocation of output receptacles to destinations to be controlled efficiently.
