The invention relates to a device and a method for producing a preform having a base geometry optimized for the subsequent stretch blow moulding process. The preform produced in the injection-moulding tool is removed in a cooled removal sleeve and cooled in the shaft by intensive contact cooling, while as far as possible no cooling contact is made with the top of the preform on account of a special contour of the cooling sleeve. On account of the reheating of this top which is possible as a result, the latter can be mechanically deformed into a new geometry which is more advantageous for the blow moulding process and thus the wall thickness of said top can also be influenced. In the subsequent blow moulding process, such a deformed preform has primarily the advantage that the plastics material distributed better in the bottle can result in considerable material savings and higher quality bottle bases.

An ultrasonic-assisted injection molding system and method for making precisely-shaped articles. A source of ultrasonic energy is positioned to apply vibrational energy to a mold cavity connected to at least one gate in flow communication with a source of molten (co)polymer. The mold is heated to a temperature of 104-116° C., and the molten (co)polymer is injected into the mold cavity. After cooling the mold until the molten (co)polymer within the gate has solidified, ultrasonic energy is applied to the mold without remelting the solidified (co)polymer within the gate until the temperature increases to 116-122° C., thereby substantially relieving flow induced stresses. The mold is then cooled until the temperature decreases to 101-107° C., and is thereafter heated until the temperature increases to 116-122° C., thereby substantially relieving any thermally induced stresses. The mold is cooled until the molten (co)polymer has solidified, thereby forming a precision molded plastic optical element.

The method is characterized in that preforms are produced by injecting a polymer melt into an injection mould, in which the geometry of the impressions forming the cavity in the mould is designed in such a way that the radial extent of the inner space in the preform body thereby produced is not greater than the radial extent of the inner space in the neck region, the preforms are removed from the open mould by a removal gripper, transfer pins of a transfer gripper are introduced into the associated inner space of a preform, the preforms are removed from the removal gripper by means of the transfer gripper and are transferred into a post-cooling device, and the preforms in the removal gripper and/or in the post-cooling device are inflated using positive pressure in such a way that the geometry of the inflated preform body is larger than the cavity in the injection mould.

A process of making a thermoplastic polyurethane by the reaction of (1) a hydroxyl terminated polyester intermediate, wherein the hydroxyl terminated polyester intermediate is comprised of repeat units that are derived from adipic acid and a glycol component comprising 1,3-propylene glycol, and said hydroxyl terminated intermediate has a number average molecular weight which is within the range of 500 to 10,000 Daltons, (2) a diisocyanate; and (3) a glycol chain extender. This thermoplastic polyurethane by this process is unique in that it has a greatly reduced tendency to bloom. This is highly desirable in applications where high clarity is desired because blooming causes articles containing the thermoplastic polyurethane to be hazy or foggy in appearance. Blooming can also reduce the ability of an article made with the thermoplastic polyurethane to be securely bound to another article with an adhesive.
