The present invention relates to printing or impressing of a plurality of symbols on a substrate (50), in particular of sequentially printing or impressing a sequence of markers such as number plates or license plates, for example a batch of car license plates. For this purpose a mechanical press (10) is provided and/or operated such that stamp units (20) comprising press units(40) are adjusted to select a string of symbols. The respective symbols are formed on surfaces (90) of the press units (40). Each constellation of selected press units (40) is defined by a consecutive identifier number (70), which is received and processed by adjusting stamp units (20). Here, stamp units (20) are adjusted by selecting adjacent press unit (40) of the stamp units (20). It follows that only minor adjustments are required, which results in mechanically and system related improvements, such as improved processing speed, lower mechanical wear and reduced power consumption.

Druckrädern (5), anlegbar ist. Die zur Zustellung der Druckwalze (2) dienende gefederte Verstellbewegung ist dabei in eine senkrecht zur zu bedruckenden Fläche gerichtete Zustellbewegung umlenkbar. Dies geschieht dadurch, daß die Druckwalze (2) in einem Halterahmen (6) geradlinig hin- und her verfahrbar ist und der Halterahmen (6) seinerseits in seinem Abstand zu der Druckform (4) kurz vor Beginn des eigentlichen Druckvorganges verstellbar und damit die Druckwalze (2) an den zu bedruckenden Blättern (3) andrückbar ist. Dazu greift an dem Halterahmen (6) ein schräge Steuerflächen (11) aufweisendes Steuerelement (10) an, dessen Verstellbewegung zweckmäßigerweise zu Beginn und in umgekehrter Richtung am Ende des eigentlichen Druckvorganges erfolgt.

A shaft assembly, including a main shaft (22), is used with a postage meter of the type including a base (4) supporting the main shaft. A printhead (14) is mounted to the outer end (20) of the main shaft so the main shaft and printhead rotate together. The main shaft has a flat surface (272) against which a number of elongate value rods (228) are mounted parallel to the main shaft axis (270). The outer ends of the value rods are coupled to the printhead (14) to operate the printing elements of the printhead. The inner ends of the value rods are connected to stepper motor drives (12), mounted to the base, to move the value rods axially. Bearings (36), mounted to the main shaft, radially position the main shaft relative to the base. At least one of the bearings is fixed to a chosen axial position along the main shaft so that such bearing, when mounted to the base, also axially positions the main shaft relative to the base.

Each wheel (8) has in each locked position (10) at least one zero position (17) corresponding to said locked position. The zero positions of each wheel are located at the same distance from the centre of the wheel. Each zero position in the respective locked position permits free passage for a sensing means (18,19). Furthermore, for determining the position of each wheel, a code position (20, 21 ) is disposed on the wheel between each pair of adjacent zero positions, so that when rotating the wheel to be set between two adjacent locked positions, one of said code positions (20, 21) passes by said sensing means.

A printhead assembly is used with a postage meter of the type having a base (4) supporting a main shaft (10) and a stepper motor drive (12). The stepper motor drive positions value rods (228) carried by the main shaft according to the value of the postage to be printed. The printhead assembly (14) includes a value module (16) mounted to an outer end (20) of the main shaft so to rotate with the shaft. A dater/slogan module (18) is also mounted to the outer end of the main shaft assembly and is positioned or indexed, such as using guide pins (56), to the value module. The components are housed within an enclosure including a separate printhead cover assembly (24). The printhead cover assembly includes an opening through which the field service personnel has access to the dater/slogan module to allow them to remove the dater/slogan module, such as for maintenance or repair, without affecting the security of the meter.
