A method for the recovery of metal values from a metal value-bearing material containing arsenic and/or antimony and a source of sulphate ions such as sulphide ore or concentrate is disclosed. In one form the method comprises the steps of: (a) providing a feed stream comprising a metal value-bearing material containing arsenic and/or antimony and a source of sulphate ions; (b) subjecting the feed stream to oxidative conditions under elevated temperature and pressure conditions in the presence of at least one component selected to decrease the effective concentration of free acid generated during the pressure oxidation step and promote the formation of pH-stable iron (III) sulphate products, thereby forming a slurry comprising a metal value-containing leach solution and a solid leach residue containing pH-stable iron (III) sulphate products and environmentally stable iron-arsenic and/or iron-antimony products; (c) separating the metal value-containing leach solution from the solid leach residue; (d) recovering the metal value (s) from the metal value-containing leach solution; and (e) recovering precious metal values, if present, in the solid leach residue by cyanide leaching.

A method is provided for the hydrometallurgical recovery of metal values from sources containing more than one metal of antimony, lead, copper, zinc, bismuth, tin, cadmium and other metals by leaching the metal containing source with a ferric fluoborate/fluroboric acid solution to provide a leachant metal containing solution. The leachant solution is contacted with specific organic extractants such as an organophosphoric acid ester, an alkyl salicylaldoxime and an amidobis(thiophosphoryl) compound in a series of extraction steps to separate metals based on the extractant used. The organic extractant solution is stripped of the extracted metal(s) and the metal(s) recovered. The remaining leach solution after extraction being either further treated to extract other metals or processed to provide metal values contained therein.

A process is disclosed for separating the disturbing elements arsenic, and if necessary antimony, iron or bismuth, from strongly mineral acid solutions by way of solvent extraction with organic solutions of hydroxamic acids, and for selectively separating the disturbing elements from each other. Arsenic is stripped with an aqueous solution containing valuable metal ions at a higher pH value in the 1.5 to 5 range, and antimony, iron or bismuth are stripped with these complexing acids.
