The invention relates to a method for exchanging the operating software (13) of a resource-limited portable data carrier (1) at a terminal (2), wherein the operating software monitors the operation of the data carrier and executes at least one function provided by the data carrier. According to the method, a new operating software (131), a boot loader (14) for installing new operating software and a terminal certificate that verifies authorization to transfer an install key are provided in the terminal (2). The terminal certificate is transmitted as part of the authentication of the terminal (2) to the data carrier (1) and checked there. An install key (501) is also transmitted to the data carrier (1). Then, the operation control of the data carrier (1) is transferred to the boot loader (14). The boot loader (14) deletes the existing operating software (13) of the data carrier (1) and transfers the new operating software (131) from the terminal (2) using the install key (501). The boot loader (14) then checks and activates the new operating software (131). Thereafter, the boot loader (14) transfers control of the data carrier (1) to the new operating software (131).

Les entêtes font l'objet d'un chaînage (Ch) et un espace de mémorisation dont le nombre de références est ramené à zéro peut être réalloué. Smartcards are gaining acceptance as a secure medium for storing information, typically of a personal and confidential nature. Unfortunately, the process of storing information to the smartcard (10) is a time consuming task, often taking much longer than to read the same amount of information from the card. The non-volatile memory within the smartcard is typically of the FLASH type and does not facilitate fast writing a fast writing process thereto. In order to speed up this process, a comparative writing algorithm is utilized which only writes changed data to the smartcard memory, thus eliminating the need for storing duplicate information.
