Method for servo-controlling when a reproduction is requested to a multi-session disk for non-real-time data or real-time data of audio or video stream. This servo-control method using the information of table of contents reads information of a table of contents written in a disk when a data-requesting command is received from a connected host; distinguishes the type of data recorded in a target location based on the read information of the table of contents; checks whether the distinguished type is corresponding to the command type; and re-sets or maintains current parameters for servo-control operation if the distinguished type is matched to the received command, so that a servo-control mechanism is adjusted to the type of the requested data before a pickup starts to move to the target location. Therefore, this servo-control method using the information of table of contents enables a servo-control operation to be adjusted stably based on the type of data to be reproduced, and makes a quick response to a host without conducting any servo-control operation when a type-mismatched command is received. In addition, although a data block preceding target data blocks has a damaged sub-Q channel data, the present method can reproduce the target data because it does not access the preceding data block.

A head positioning system particularly intended for a magnetic disk storage system has a magnetic recording medium (3) with a periodic arrangement of a data tracks (6) and a servo tracks (4, 5) with a track pitch P, a multi-head (1) carrying a plurality of head elements (H1-Hn) arranged in a direction perpendicular to the tracks. The length or spacing between the head elements and that of the tracks is similar to that of a sliding vernier caliper, so that only a small relative transverse movement is required to bring one of the heads into alignment with a particular track. In one embodiment, the spacing of the heads is (N h +1/M)P where N h and M are integers. One of the head elements (H1-Hn) is selected as a multi-head (1) moves transversely to the tracks so that the selected head is just on a servo track. The head element (H1-Hn) to form a data head for writing and/or reading data on and from the tracks is determined in accordance with the selected servo head. Thus, since a servo signal is continuously obtained from one of the head elements (H1-Hn) an accurate and quick head positioning is achieved.

A method of initializing a data-recording media (10), particularly tape, by use of the same type of media drive used for data-recording purposes, in which the edge (42) of the recordable field on the media (10) is first located by a test read / write process and the media is then transported in a succession of passes across a transducing head (62), during each of which the head is periodically and selectively energized to write spaced marker bursts (46) and servo-positioning bursts (36, 38), with the transducing head (62) being moved open-loop a distance corresponding to a half-track width between each media transport. During the first such pass, the marker bursts (46) and servo-positioning bursts (36, 38) are located on the basis of tape travel distance, and on successive passes burst location is determined by sensing the previously-recorded marker and servo bursts and timing a predetermined distance therefrom by use of an internal clock. In the case of tape, successive recording passes are made with the tape travelling alternately backwards and forwards.
