The present invention discloses a method for controlling the position of a radiation beam on an optical carrier (1), e.g. a CD, a DVD, a HD-DVD or a BD disc, in an optical drive. Initially, the optical pickup unit (OPU) is fixated relative to the optical carrier and there is established a closed-loop control - so-called capture - in response to an error signal e.g. radial or focus error tracking signal (FE, RE). Then, by servo control means (9, 50) a first bandwidth (BWl) is set in a stabilization period (SP), and subsequently a second bandwidth (B W2) of the servo control means is set. The second bandwidth (B W2) is lower than the first bandwidth (BWl). The invention applies bandwidth switching and thereby provides a more robust operation of the optical drive, as the first and second bandwidths may be separately optimised. Additionally, the power consumption of the optical pickup unit (OPU) may be reduced.

The invention relates to a method for carrying out a track jump and to a playback device (10) for optical storage disks (15). The inventive method enables an accelerated track jump to take place while the storage disk (15) is not moving. In order for a read device (2) to jump a track between a current track and a predetermined track (30) of an optical storage disk (15) introduced into the playback device (10), a time is established depending on the tracks to be skipped and the read device (2) moves in the direction of the predetermined track (30) for this set period of time. When a track jump is requested, the read device (2) is moved in the direction of a run-in area (20) of the optical storage disk (15) until a starting position (25) is detected. The time required for the track jump from the starting position (25) to the predetermined track (30) is established from this predetermined track (30).

An optical disk apparatus records information by irradiating a laser beam from a pickup onto an optical disk. A scanning section scans the laser beam relative to the optical disk. A recording control section controls the scanning section to effect recording of information. A drawing control section is provided for controlling the pickup and the scanning section to effect drawing of a visible image on the optical disk according to image information, such that the laser beam is changed between a first intensity incapable of acting on the optical disk and a second intensity capable of acting on the optical disk. A servo section periodically detects the laser beam reflected back from the optical disk when the laser beam has the first intensity, and servo-controls the irradiating of the laser beam during the drawing of the visible image based on the detection of the laser beam. The drawing control section controls the pickup for forcibly changing the laser beam to the first intensity from the second intensity when the second intensity is maintained over a predetermined period pursuant to the image information, thereby enabling the servo section to detect the laser beam having the first intensity for continuing the servo-control.

An optical disc drive scans selected tracks on a record carrier via a beam of radiation (24) from a head (22). The head is positioned on the track by a tracking system. The tracking system includes a main servo loop, constituted by a motor (40) for moving the head along a rail (46) transverse to the tracks, position means (41) for generating a position signal in dependence of an actual position of the head, and an amplifier (44) generating a driving signal coupled to the motor. The amplifier has an adjustable gain that is set in dependence on a friction profile. The device has a memory (34) for storing the friction profile as determined during a calibration process. By compensating friction of the rail a reliable response of the tracking system to jump commands is achieved. Power dissipation is reduced because the driving signal as generated is just strong enough to move the head along the rail.

The interference pattern formed by the interference between the information light beam and the recording reference light beam is recorded in an information-recording layer (3) cubically. Thus a simple optical system for recording/reproducing information is structured without decreasing the amount of information.

An optical disk apparatus capable of drawing a visible image on an optical disk by irradiating a laser beam onto the optical disk, the apparatus comprising: rotating means for rotating the optical disk; detecting means for detecting a rotating state of the optical disk; an optical pickup arranged to irradiate the laser beam onto the optical disk which is rotated by the rotating means, so that the visible image is drawn on the optical disk; feeding means for feeding the optical pickup in a radial direction of the optical disk; and tracking control means for controlling an irradiating position of the laser beam relative to the optical disk, wherein the tracking control means fixes the irradiating position of the laser beam in the radial direction of the optical disk during the course of one rotation of the optical disk, and shifts the irradiating position of the laser beam by a first distance in the radial direction each time the detecting means detects one rotation of the optical disk, and wherein the feeding means feeds the optical pickup in the radial direction by a second distance when the detecting means detects that the optical disk has rotated a predetermined number of rotations.
