ribbon feed system for a matrix printer utilizes metering rollers (44,46) located on the printhead carrier (18) to maintain a substantially zero ribbon velocity relative to the receiving medium (12) with an on-carrier ribbon feed. By coordinating roller rotation with carrier motion, relative motion that would tend to cause smearing during mark formation is avoided. For printers that inject current into the ribbon to cause printing, friction drag is reduced and tension control is simplified by collecting current at the metering rollers for return to the printhead energizing circuitry. Such dual use of the metering rollers takes advantage of the firm intimate contact that exists for metering to establish a high quality electrical connection.

An easily assemblable transverse magnetic printing head and method for making same are disclosed for use in a coincident current, matrix-driven, transverse printing head. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, digit lines pass through a recording gap in mirror image fashion as between adjacent word groupings. Similarly, the word line patterns are arranged on a printed circuit board in a zig-zag fashion. A feature common to both the word and digit line printed circuits, however, is the presence of a small expanse of circuit wiring unsupported by printed circuit substrate material through which a high permeability magnetic comb structure is inserted to form required recording gaps. The coincident current scheme is retained by driving the digit lines from alternating directions. The arrangement of the digit lines in the present invention permits the use of a planar printed circuit with no crossovers and therefore a circuit which is easily fabricated in a flexible, printed circuit design.

Coincident current windings on a magnetic print head are driven in a special sequence to minimize undesired spurious printing effects otherwise caused by undesirable concentrations of magnetic flux. Rather than energizing all digit windings (in accordance with supplied data values) for each successive energization of a word winding, the digit windings are driven in multiple sub-sets or groups. Only one such sub-set is energized at any given time and the members of each sub-set are chosen to minimize undesired spurious magnetic flux distributions for any given magnetic printing head configuration.

A linear array (1,2) of magnetic printing elements (3) for forming a magnetic print head is formed by a thin flexible magnetic foil (8) out of which a comb-like structure (10) of magnetic elements (3) is etched. One half of a winding structure is provided as printed circuit on a first flexible foil (14) together with ground (17) and control (18) lines. A second foil (15) carries in printed circuit form a complementary winding structure with the second half of the winding. Superimposed in sandwitch structure is the magnetic foil arranged between the two printed circuits foils. By connecting the end areas of the half winding structures, e.g. by soldering, a complete continuous winding or coil resp. is formed around each single magnetic element (3). Thus a coil with many turns is possible.
