To prevent a spindle motor from stopping rotation while data on a magnetic disk is being erased by using a permanent magnet 151. Data in the whole area of the magnetic disk 113 is erased as a consequence of the magnetic disk 113 rotating in the magnetic field of the permanent magnet 151 located so as to face a part of the magnetic disk 113. A back yoke 161 is located so as to face a base 111. The back yoke 161 gives a magnetic force to the spindle motor in the opposite direction of the magnetic force of the erasing permanent magnet 151 so that the fluid dynamic bearing spindle motor can retain the rotation as required without stopping rotation.

An erase head assembly for high speed and density, precision magnetic tape data storage systems movable into and out of an erase/record position without affecting the tape transport path. A cylindrical drum having an axis of rotation and a peripheral, tape bearing, curved surface of a width sufficient to bear against and make intimate contact across the width of the magnetic tape is provided in the tape transport path. The permanent magnet erase head is mounted within the drum adjacent a first portion of the peripheral curved surface, the magnetic erase head providing a permanent magnetic erase field extending outside the first portion of the peripheral surface and across the width thereof. The drum is rotated between a first rotational position, wherein the permanent magnet erase head is positioned in the tape transport path to effect erasure of the magnetic tape, and a second rotational position, wherein the permanent magnet erase head is rotated out of the tape transport path and distanced therefrom sufficiently to prevent erasure of the magnetic tape to allow magnetic tape transport without erasure. The permanent magnet erase head assembly is preferably formed of an array of an odd number of alternatingly polarized permanent magnets of substantially equal thickness having terminators sandwiching the array therebetween for suppressing respective portions of the fields associated with the adjacent leading and trailing permanent magnets in the array.

A permanent magnet type erasing head for generating a gradually decreasing alternating magnetic field in which a plurality of magnetic poles (43-45, 110, 111) are provided along a magnetic recording medium. The first magnetic pole (43, 110) generates a magnetic field of an intensity strong enough to saturate the magnetic recording medium while each of the second and succeeding magnetic poles (44, 111) except the last magnetic pole (45) have a magnetic field with an opposite polarity to that of a preceding magnetic pole and a weaker intensity than that of the preceding magnetic pole.
