Energy absorbing webbing is provided for use in child safety seat and child restraint devices. A harness system includes energy-absorbing regions into the construction of the harness to allow some release or extension of the harness during use. The energy-absorbing regions of the harness are formed using energy-absorbing webbing in a given region or regions to permit the webbing to extend or elongate so that strong forces are not fully and directly imparted to the child. The energy-absorbing region may be installed at various positions within the child safety seat and harness system and may be incorporated into the child safety harness as original equipment or as a retrofit feature.

A load sensor (24) for a vehicle safety belt (10) comprises means for determining an electrical characteristic of the belt and control means for comparing the sensed characteristic with a reference level for the characteristic. In one embodiment, conductive fibers (26, 28) are interwoven into the belt and electrical contacts (30, 32) are provided at each end 20 thereof. Excessive loading of the belt results in a break in the fibres which, in turn, results in electrical discontinuity. The discontinuity is sensed by an electrical sensor and indicator means is provided to indicate to the driver of the vehicle that a belt has been excessively loaded.

The test circuit provides for parallel testing of the storage capacitor (130,132) and inertia resistors (114,118). The capacitor is tested by discharging and charging the capacitor. The values of the inertia switch resistors are determined by switching known resistive values in parallel with the inertia switch resistors. Based on the monitored voltage values during the switching, resistance values are calculated.

The webbings are comprised of elongation yarns, such as partially oriented yarns (POY), and ground yarns. In certain embodiments, because they are generally flat, the energy absorbing webbings are suitable for use in retractors. Also provided are processes of manufacturing generally flat, energy absorbing webbings. In certain embodiments, the webbings are subjected to heat using first and second set of rollers with various feed ratios.

An inflatable belt portion (104) is attached to a lap belt portion (112) by stitching, some of which becomes progressively detached to dissipate the forces imposed on the inflatable belt portion (104). The inflatable belt portion (104) is inflated by a hybrid inflator. The lap belt portion (112) tightens against an occupant's lap when the inflatable belt portion (104) is inflated. A coupling member (116) removably couples the lap belt portion (112) to a retainer (122) at the inner side of a seat (108). When the coupling member (116) is removed from the retainer (122), the lap belt portion (112) is wound on a retractor (124) so that the inflatable belt portion (104) is moved to an out-of-the-way position.
