Thus, the scrap or other objective materials grabbed by the grab bucket of the invention can be efficiently thrown off by vibration and the action of inertia of the objective materials only by fully opening the grab.

The invention provides a method and apparatus for controlling the level of clamping pressure applied by a clamp (14) to a load (16). A pump (20), whose output is controlled by a normally open valve (34), establishes an initial level of clamping pressure. Through the use of a number of controllable fluid discharge means (50, 52, 54), this pressure is automatically increased in increments depending upon the resistance of the load to the clamping pressure exerted. In a preferred embodiment, the controllable fluid discharge means include discharge cylinders (58, 70, 90) that contain predetermined volumes of fluid dischargeable by free-floating pistons (62, 82, 92) residing therein. The outputs of the discharge cylinders are controlled by pressure-responsive valves (72, 92) to produce the desired relationship between clamp pressure and load rigidity.

The invention has for its object to embody a pincer grab such that no torsional forces can occur. The pincer grab according to the invention displays to this end the feature that the transmission means are arranged such that the forces produced by the drive unit in a vertical plane are transmitted in substantially that same vertical plane onto the jaws, such that no or only negligible torsion can occur in the transmission means.

Die Erfindung betrifft insbesondere auch den hydraulischen Schwenkantrieb für einen solchen Greifer (1), mit zumindest zwei Abtriebsstücken, die an einem gemeinsamen Träger (4) um jeweils eine Schwenkachse (3) drehbar gelagert sind und jeweils drehfeste Verbindungsmittel zum drehfesten Verbinden mit jeweils einem/r der genannten Greifarme (2) oder -schalen besitzen, wobei die Abtriebsstücke von separaten, eigenständig funktionsfähigen hydraulischen Antriebseinheiten (5) gegenläufig zueinander antreibbar sind.
