The invention relates to a method for producing sulfuric acid, wherein, in a production mode of the method, sulfur is oxidized in a first oxidation stage in order to produce sulfur dioxide and wherein the sulfur dioxide is catalytically oxidized in a second oxidation stage in order to produce sulfur trioxide. The sulfur trioxide is absorbed in at least one absorption stage. In the production mode, process gases are discharged from the absorption stage that is last in the flow direction. In a stand-by mode of the method, at least one heating stage for heating the processes gases is activated. The process gases exiting the absorption stage are conducted to the heating stage, and the processes gases are circulated through the heating stage, the second oxidation stage, and the absorption stage.

Commercial production of sulfuric acid is almost entirely accomplished nowadays using the contact process. And the trend is to increase conversion efficiency and reduce emissions of unconverted sulfur dioxide. By using a special combination of contact catalyst beds, a single contact single absorption (SCSA) system can be engineered to achieve the conversion and emission capabilities of conventional double contact double absorption systems. Thus, the complexity and cost of incorporating a second absorption tower and associated heat exchanger in the system can be omitted. In the SCSA system, the initial catalyst bed or beds comprise vanadium oxide catalyst and the last catalyst bed or beds comprise platinum catalyst operating at a much lower temperature than the initial beds.

A vanadium-containing catalyst produced by using polyvanadic acid as the vanadium source. Such a catalyst can be produced by mixing a polyvanadic acid sol prepared by subjecting an aqueous solution of a metavanadate salt to ion exchange with a proton-form cation-exchange resin and polycondensation with the catalyst-constituting components other than vanadium or precursors thereof, and drying and/or firing the obtained mixture. This catalyst exhibits enough catalytic activity even under mild reaction conditions and can suitably be used in the synthesis of phthalic anhydride by partial oxidation of o-xylene, that of benzaldehyde by partial oxidation of toluene, that of benzoic acid by partial oxidation of toluene, that of anisaldehyde by partial oxidation of p-methoxytoluene, that of propylene by oxidative dehydrogenation of propane, that of isobutene by oxidative dehydrogenation of isobutane, that of methyl formate by oxidative dehydrogenation of methanol, that of acrylonitrile by ammoxidation of propane, and so on.

Ein Vanadiumoxid und Alkaliverbindungen enthaltender Katalysator zur Oxidation von SO₂ zu SO₃ wird durch Tränken vorgefertigter Trägerkörper mit Tränklösungen, die Vanadium und Alkalien enthalten, thermische Behandlung der getränkten Trägerkörper bei erhöhter Temperatur und anschließende Aktivierung bei einer Temperatur von 750 - 1000°C unter oxidierenden Bedingungen hergestellt. Zur Herstellung der Tränklösungen wird feinkörniges V₂O₅ in saurem, wäßrigem Medium unter Zusatz eines Reduktionsmittels und Reduktion zu VO²⁺ aufgelöst, wobei Säure und Reduktionsmittel etwa in stöchiometrischer Menge zur Auflösung und Reduktion des V₂O₅ eingesetzt werden. Die Alkalien werden als Salze eingesetzt. In der Lösung wird eine SO₄-Menge eingestellt, die zur Überführung der gesamten Menge der Alkalien in neutrale Sulfate bei der Trocknung und Aktivierung ausreicht.

The invention relates to a method and an installation for producing sulphuric acid. First of all, a product gas flow (5) containing sulphur dioxide is produced. The product gas flow (5) is supplied to a reaction chamber (1). A catalyst (3) is located in the reaction chamber (1). In the presence of said catalyst sulphur dioxide reacts to form sulphur trioxide. In further parts of the installation the resulting sulphur trioxide is converted to sulphuric acid. According to the invention, an oxidising gas flow (6) is supplied to the reaction chamber (1) alternately with the product gas flow (5).
