A method is provided for synthesizing a polymer in a controlled fashion using a ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) reaction, wherein polymerization is carried out using a catalytically effective amount of an olefin metathesis catalyst and a bridged bicyclic or polycyclic olefin monomer that contains at least two heteroatoms directly or indirectly linked to each other. Preferred catalysts are Group 8 transition metal complexes, particularly complexes of Ru and Os. Such complexes include the ruthenium bisphosphine complex (Pcy3)2(Cl)2Ru=CHPh (1) and the ruthenium carbene complex (ImesH2)(Pcy3)(Cl)2Ru=CHPh (2). The invention also provides novel regioregular polymers synthesized using the aforementioned methodology, wherein the polymers may be saturated , unsaturated, protected, and/or telechelic. An examplary polymer is poly((vinyl alcohol)2-alt-methylene)(MVOH).

The invention relates to optically active high-molecular compounds represented by the structural formula (1) and stationary-phase materials containing the same. The high-molecular compounds exhibit optical activity by virtue of their stacking helical structures wherein the aromatic groups are distorted, thus being useful as optically active stationary phases for HPLC or polarized-light absorbers. In the formula (1), Ar is an aromatic ring; R and R are each hydrogen or an organic group; R and R are each a substituent; n is an integer of 2 or above; X is -(CH2)m-, an aromatic group, a vinyl group, a heteroatom, or a heteroatom-containing group; and m is an integer of 0 or above, with the proviso that the compound may have two to four R s and/or two to four R s which may be each the same or different from each other.

A polymer which has side chains comprising a functional group containing a cyclic moiety composed of carbon and hydrogen and/or of carbon, hydrogen, and X (X is a heteroatom) and having aromaticity and which has a number-average molecular weight of 250 to 1,000,000. That molar extinction coefficient of the polymer which is attributable to the cyclic moieties having aromaticity is lower by at least 30% than that molar extinction coefficient of the polymerizable monomer used for incorporating the cyclic moieties having aromaticity which is attributable to the cyclic moiety having aromaticity. This polymer has a hypochromic effect because it has a stacked structure in which the cyclic moieties have been superposed. When an electron-donating compound or electron-accepting compound is added, the polymer forms a charge-transfer complex.

An arylstyrene polymer comprising repeating units represented by general formula (I) [wherein R1 to R5 represent substituents containing a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or at least one member selected from a carbon atom, an oxygen atom, a nitrogen atom, a sulfur atom, a phosphorus atom, a selenium atom, a silicon atom and a tin atom, and at least one of R1 to R5 represents an aryl group having a hydrogen atom, an aryl group having a halogen atom or an aryl group having a substituent containing at least one member selected from a carbon atom, an oxygen atom, a nitrogen atom, a sulfur atom, a phosphorus atom, a selenium atom, a silicon atom and a tin atom], said polymer having a degree of polymerization of 5 or more and a stereoregularity which is mainly a syndiotactic structure. The arylstyrene copolymer has high syndiotacticity and exhibits excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance and electrical properties. Further, the styrene copolymer has high syndiotacticity, exhibits a broad range of temperatures wherein thermoforming is feasible, and is excellent in heat resistance. Therefore, the present invention can be effectively utilized as a means for providing a heat-resistant resin, raw materials for films, etc.
